What is wimax?
 WIMAX is a IP based broadband wireless access techniques
similar to WI-FI digital communications over long distances
and better quality of service
 Greater bandwidth coverage range up to 50 km and speed up
to 70mbps(shared among user). with the IEEE 802.16m update
expected to offer up to 1 Gbps fixed speeds

 WIMAX is a wireless digital communications system also

known as IEEE 802.16.
Types of wimax
FIXED WIMAX:
Fixed WIMAX deployments do not cater for hand off
between base stations, therefore the service provider
cannot offer mobility.
broadband wireless access up to 30 miles(50 km) for
fixed stations
MOBILE WIMAX:
Mobile WIMAX implementations can be used to deliver
both fixed & mobile services.
 Coverage area up to 3-10 miles(5-15 km) for mobile stations.

OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)

It distribute the data into several parallel data streams

instead of one single data stream .
The inter symbol interference (ISI) is very small.
Much more easier to use as hardware implementation is
very simple.
OFDM Transmitter
OFDM Receiver
MAC
During Transmission it receives MAC service data
units from upper layer and encapsulate them with
MAC protocol units and transfer to OFDM.
During Receiving the MAC takes MAC protocol units
from OFDM and decapsulate it and send to upper layer
The other feature of MAC is power saving ,security
using encryption such as AES and DES.
Advantage of WIMAX
Wimax coverage- A single station of wimax can operate
and provide for hundered of user at a time and manage
sending and receiving of data at very high speed with full of
network security
Provide very high speed data transfer capability over
long distance
Multifunctionality- Wimax Technology perform a variety
of task at a time such as offering high speed internet,
providing telephone service, transformation of data, video
streaming, voice application etc.
Potential and development
Wimax Infrastructure- easy and flexible
 Ultra wideband-2to 10 GH
 Homeland security due to encryption
Problem:-Coverage Vs Throughput
The problem arises in the Wimax system when one has
to trade off between coverage and throughput.
The users at the fringes of the coverage area don’t get
the optimum speed in communication.
As increase in the coverage and throughput would be a
win –win situation for both user and service provider.
Conclusion
We started with the understanding the Wimax and
graduated toward the problem of the coverage and
throughput in the Mobile Wimax system thus realizing
analysis that we can see how differnt changes in the
parameters can effect the coverage and throughput.
