Hydraulic jump

It is the sudden transition from a supercritical open

channel flow regime to a subcritical flow motion.
Hydraulic jump with rollers

For larger Fr , the jump is characterised by:-

• a marked roller,
• some highly turbulent motion with macro-scale
vortices
• significant kinetic energy dissipation

Undular hydraulic jump

For Fr slightly above unity, the hydraulic jump is

characterised as a smooth rise of the free surface
followed by a train of stationary free-surface
undulations.
Undular Hydraulic jump
Free surface wave characteristics

• Quasi-periodic but the longitudinal profile neither

sinusoidal nor cnoidal.
• Compatibility with the Boussinesq equation
• Position of the Side wall cross waves
• Shallow angle of the shock waves with the wall
Fr* = q/√(g d*3 )

Fr* =Fr1 -0.119

Θ = 28.1* Fr10.38
• Fr * is the flow froude number at the inception of
the shock waves
• d* is the flow depth at the onset of the shock waves
at the sidewall.
