Partial Replacemnt of Fine Aggregate With Iron Slag
Partial Replacemnt of Fine Aggregate With Iron Slag
• Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a rigid cellular plastic invented in Germany 1950.EPS beads are
often used as the bases of packaging material . Currently millions of tons of waste polystyrene are
produced in the world . It was produced harmful effect in ecosystem .This leads to large amount of
waste material which is not biodegradable . The polystyrene beads can be easily merged into
mortar or concrete to produce light weight concrete.
• Concrete usage in the modern world is exceeded only by that of naturally occurring water . The
cement industry is one of the three primary producers of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas .
We can reduce the pollution effect on environment by increasing the usage of industrial by-products
in our construction industry . In India ,natural river sand is traditionally used in mortars and
concrete. However growing environmental ristrictions to the exploitation of sand from riverbeds
have resulted in a search for alternative sand, particularly near the larger metropolitan areas . This
has brought in severe strains on the availability of sand forcing the construction industry to look for
an alternative construction material . So we are partially replacing fine aggregate with iron slag.
OBJECTIVE
• EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE(EPS) :
• Size of EPS(1.18-2.36mm)
• Water absorption(Nill)
• Specific gravity(0.013)
• Unit weight
• IRON SLAG:
• Specific gravity(6)
• Water absorption
•
LITERATURE REVIEW
• EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE(EPS):
• 1)EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON REPLACEMENT OF COARSE AGGREGATE BY EPS BEADS IN CONCRETE TO ACHIEVE
LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE :-
• WORKABILITY OF THE CONCRETE IS LESSER THAN THE NORMAL MIX IN ADDITION OF PARTIAL REPLACEMENT BY EPS BEADS EPSCRETE
CAN BE PRODUCED WITH A LESS W/C RATIO THAN REQUIRED WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE WORKABILITY.
• COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THE EPSCRETE INCREASES WITH DEXREASE IN THE REPLACEMENTS LEVEL OF THE EPS BEADS CAN
REPLACED UPTO 5% WITHOUT ALTERNATING THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE CONSIDERABLY.
• FOR SILICA FUME WILL BE ADDED TO THE EPS BEADS THAN INCREASING THE COMPRESSIBVE STRENGTH.
• BY OBTAINING THE RESULT, WE SUGGEST THAT THE EPS CONCRETE IS BEST SUITABLE FOR NON-STRUCTURAL
ELEMENTS LIKE PATITION WALLS, FOOTPATH, KERBS, PARAPET WALLS, CANAL SIDE EMBANKMENTS, ETC.
• IRON SLAG:-
• 1) REPLACEMENT OF RIVER SAND BY IRON SLAG :-
• THE IRON SLAG WILL BE PARTIALLY REPLACEMENT WITH THE FINE AGGREGATE THAN IT GIVES THE MORE
STRENGTH COMPARED TO THE NORMAL MIX CONCRETE.
• AFTER ADDING 10% IRON SLAG IN MIX,THERE WAS AN INCREASE OF 26% AFTER 7 DAYS,50% INCREASE AFTER 28
DAYS AND 43% INCREASE AFTER 56 DAYS AS COMPARED TO THE CONTROL MIX.
