Orogenesis
Orogenesis is the thickening of the continental crust and the
building of mountains over millions of years and it translates
from Greek as “birth of mountains”, (oros is the Greek word
for mountain).
Orogeny encompasses all aspects of mountain formation
including plate tectonics, terrane accretion, regional
metamorphism, thrusting, folding, faulting, and igneous
intrusions.
Orogenesis is primarily covered in the plate tectonics section
of the earth science education materials, but it is important to
review for the landform section because it includes
deformation processes responsible for mountain building.
Deformation
Deformation processes deform or alter the earth’s crust by
extreme stress or pressure in the crust and mantle.
Folding
Faulting
