CHEVRON GAS EXPLOSION
• On Feb 11 2014, One person was injured and another missing
after an explosion on Tuesday at a natural gas well in
southwestern Pennsylvania owned by Chevron Corporation

• Ian McKee, 27, an employee of Cameron International Corp, a


Chevron contractor, was burned to death on that day,when the
natural gas escaping from the new Lanco 7H well in Greene
County southwest of Pittsburgh exploded.

• Chevron Corp has been fined over $900,000 for a February


2014 explosion that killed a Pennsylvania man.

• It is said that this tragedy has caused the highest fine until
today,just because the death of only one contractor at the
location
EFFECT OF THE TRAGEDY

• As the effect of the tragedy towards CHEVRON, the family of a worker


who was killed in a February explosion at a Chevron natural gas well site
in Greene County has filed suit(SUE) against them.

• State officials said one of three wells on the pad burst into flames, killing
McKee and leaving another worker WITH MINOR INJURIES.

• The fire CAUSED BY THE GAS EXPLOSION continued to burn for


five days.
CAUSES OF THE TRAGEDY
• Several causes of the tragedy stated by the Official State Government of
PENNSYLVANIA, but has been denied by the CHEVRON Company.

• In fact, the STATE GOVERNMENT has issued nine violations against


Chevron for the incident

• Those included hazardous venting of gas, open burning and discharge of


production fluids onto the ground.

• The company was also charged for blocking access to department


officials for nearly two days after the fire broke out.

A Chevron subsidiary has agreed to pay the Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection $940,000 for multiple violations involving a
2014 fatal explosion at a natural gas well site in southwest Pennsylvania.

State investigators ruled the explosion was caused by human error and
faulted Chevron for poor supervision of workers on the site.

The company has agreed to violations including hazardous venting of gas


and not properly controlling and containing production fluids, according to
the Consent Assessment of Civil Penalty signed by both parties
A year later, Chevron has agreed to pay $5 million to settle a
wrongful death suit with McKee’s family.

McKee’s fragmented remains were found and identified days later


by a forensic anthropologist.

The well that exploded was capped 11 days later, therefore


abandoned for good.
