MARKET STUDY OF SUGAR

INTRODUCTION
-Sugar is a broad term applied to a large number of
carbohydrates present in many plants and characterized by
a more or less sweet taste. Table sugar is the common name
for a sugar known as sucrose. The chemical or molecular
formula for sucrose is C12H22O11.

-These products include brown sugar, granulated sugar,

confec-tionery sugar, caramel, molasses, sugar cubes, syrup.
These are used in making cakes, soft drinks, candy and wide
variety of other foods.
INTRODUCTION
-The production of sugar in a sugar mill has been described as
a "noisy, steamy, hellish process" that produces "hundred
pound bags of granulated sweetness."

-The global demand for sugar is the primary driver of

sugarcane agriculture. Cane accounts for 79% of sugar
produced; most of the rest is made from sugar beets.
Sugarcane predominantly grows in the tropical and
subtropical regions (sugar beets grow in colder temperate
regions).

SRA sees sugar production meeting local

demand
Published May 12, 2018, 10:01 PM

Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) assured that the

Philippines will have enough sugar for the current crop year,
but uncertainty now looms on whether the country will have
enough sugar farmers moving forward.
SRA Administrator Hermenegildo Serafica said he was
confident that the Philippine sugar production will be able to
meet domestic demand as well as the country’s commitment to
the US Quota for this crop year.
A crop year begins on September 1 and ends August 31 of
the following year.
Despite the assurance, Serafica took note of the “problem
besetting the industry” at the moment, which is the scarcity of
cane cutters.
As of production week ending May 6, 2018, sugar output
already hit 1.92 million MT, which means the country only
needs to produce 340,594 MT more to meet its target.

- the local supply of sugar continues to remain stable as
production of the commodity has increased 14 percent
with prices almost back to their normal level.

-Latest data from the Sugar Regulatory Administration

(SRA) showed that local raw-sugar production went up by
14 percent to 363,406 metric tons (MT) as of end-
November.
-The current production is higher than the 317,453 MT
recorded in the same period in 2017. Sugar crop year starts
every September and ends in August.

-Based on data on sugar production for crop year 2018-

2019, output in terms of 50-kilogram bags reached 7.3
million bags from 6.3 million in the comparative period.

-[The country’s raw-sugar demand was 47 percent lower at

5.5 million MT from the 2017 level of 10.3 million MT.
-The total sugarcanes milled during the period was 4.2 million
MT, 10 percent higher than last year’s 3.8 million MT.

-In terms of refined sugar, production increased by 42 percent

to 138,547 MT, from 97,396 MT recorded in the same period
in 2017.

-Following the importation a few months ago, mill gate price

of the commodity has now dropped to the P1,400-level after
breaching the P2,000 per 50-kilo mark.
-Latest projections showed that the Philippines is seen producing 2.25
million MT of raw sugar this crop year.

-This is seven percent higher than the 2.1 million MT output in the
previous crop year which experienced unfavorable weather conditions
and decrease in production area.

-This as consumption of cane sugar will remain strong despite high

sugar prices and increased taxes on sugar sweetened beverages as
soft drink manufacturers increase the usage of cane sugar and shift
away from high fructose corn syrup use.
