DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT AROUND AIT
DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT AROUND AIT
DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT AROUND AIT
DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT AROUND AIT

• When the settlement of the entire structure is not even i.e. not same for all footing and
for wall, it is known as differential settlement.
• It can result in damage to the structure, and is therefore, of concern.
VISUAL OBSERVATION

• Exterior cracking: Originating from the ground

“Cracks that are wider at the top or bottom may indicate that there has been foundation
movement, with the direction of the widening giving an indication of the likely direction
of the movement”
• Sagging floors
PROBABLE CAUSE OF FAILURE

• Soil beneath the structure expands, contracts or shifts away.

• Mature trees with roots and other vegetation
• Flooding and poor drainage.
• Vibration from nearby construction or poorly compacted soil.
• Weak bearing capacity of soil
CONCLUSION

• The following reasons might have caused the differential settlement:

-Flooding and poor drainage (AIT Flood- 2011)
-Poorly compacted soil.
-Ground water extraction.
• External crack is due to the differential settlement.
