LIGHTING AND AUTOMATION

WHY IS LIGHTING REQUIRED?

PERFORMANCE
• Adequate lightings on walls and vertical surfaces gives satisfactory
appearance of room and people.
• Important factor – avoid reflection in display screens
• The more difficult is the task the more amount of light is required
• Speed of vision increases with increased light level .

TYPES OF LIGHTING
AMBIENT (GENERAL) LIGHTING :-
It provides overall illumination for a room, and is intended to create a uniform light level
throughout a space.
Ambient lighting takes many forms, including: ceiling-mounted or recessed fixtures that direct light
downwards; wall sconces or floor-lamp that wash the walls with light; cove, soffit and valance
lighting that bounces light off ceilings and walls.
TASK LIGHTING :-
• Targeted to a particular area of a room, task lighting is intended to illuminate
a specific function.
• Typical examples of task lighting are under counter slight strips, directional
reading lamps, and vanity mirror lights.
• Task lighting should enhance visual clarity so that it keeps your eyes from
getting tired.

ACCENT LIGHTING :-
• Accent Lighting is directional light that highlights a specific object, an
architectural detail, or other feature in your room.
• Typical examples of accent lighting are recessed wall washers and stairwell
lights. An accent light will often have a cover over it to direct light in a
certain direction.
• Accent lighting is often used outdoors, to highlight a beautiful tree, plant or
water feature, or to draw the eye to a particular area of the landscape.
• Recessed or track lighting is often used for accent lighting, with adjustable
fittings that allow light to be focused precisely even on a small object.

AESTHETIC LIGHTING :-
• Using light as art.
• Typical examples of aesthetic lighting are spotlights and picture lights.

How to design/plan lighting for a space?

When planning the layers of light in a room, it usually makes sense to consider
the ambient lighting first, then consider task and accent lighting. And in a hallway
that doubles as a photo or art gallery, accent lighting might be the first
consideration.
METHODS OF LIGHT DISPERSEMENT
TYPES OF LIGHT FIXTURES
Incandescent Lamps
•Appealing
•Warm, attractive color (2600-2900K)
•Dimmable
•Wide variety
•Not energy efficient

Low Voltage Incandescent Lamps

• Usually low wattage but not inherently
energy efficient
• Greatest advantage: size
Halogen Lamps Compact Fluorescent
•Appealing • 7,9, and 13 watt twin tubes (“PL” lamps) for step lights, low level
•Crisp warm, attractive color (2800-3100K) lighting
•Dimmable • Triple tube, Circular lamps 18-58 watts for general lighting
•Wide variety
•Longer life, slightly more energy efficient

Fluorescent Ballast Technology

LED PANEL LIGHTS

• With traditional fluorescent fittings up to 40% of the light is "lost" in the fitting itself.
• Integral LED panels deliver a wider beam angle with more usable light with less power when compared to
fluorescent fittings.
• Existing florescent panels one for one with no changes to ceiling grid.
• Similar or brighter light levels can be achieved by using less LED fittings than existing. E.g. in a room that has
4 light fittings across, you may be able to reduce to 3 across using LED panels – making even more savings.
Two basic design techniques of light calculation :
1. Point by point method
Method based on inverse square law states that illuminance at a point on a surface perpendicular to light ray is equal to the
luminous intensity of the source at the point , divided by the square of the distance between the source and the point of
interest .
e = i/d^2
E= illuminance in footcandles
I = luminous intensity in candelas
D = distance in feet between the source and the point of interest.

Advantages :
1.Easily applicable to areas in which point source involves and no surface of reflectance is present.
2.Incandescent , hid where surface reflectance is negligible.

2. Lumen method
Average lighting level on a interior plane, taking into account the room surface reflectance.
E= phi/a
E= average illuminance in footcandles
Phi= total flux in lumen on the area
A= area in square feet.
LIGHTING CALCULATION
Measure the area of premises. LIGHT ANGLE AND SPAN
Calculate area = Length X width
Lets have a practical example of how many led lights are
required in a bed room or drawing room.
If we consider a room of 12 feet x 12 feet size, then area will
be 144 sq.ft.
Now we need area in sq.meter so you need to multiply with
0.093
We have now area = 144×0.093 = 13.39 sq.meter
Every premise needs different light level requirements.
A showroom requires more light than library. Living room
needs more light than bedroom. You can find many sample
data for your premises on internet. Here are some data.
•Halls and conference rooms – 500 lx
•Classrooms – 300lx
•Stairs in public buildings – 75 lx
•Bedroom – 150Lx
•Stadium – 750 Lx
Now consider bed room of size 13.39 sq. meter. We want
150Lx, so we need to multiply.
Lumens = 150(Lux) x 13.39(area) = Around 2000 Lumens
Now choosing lights: A typical well built LED
downlight provide 80-110 Lumens per watt, let’s consider
100 lumens.
So we need total of 20W LED light to get 2000 lumens and
150 Lux for our sample bed room.
That means number of LED lights = 20w( total
light)/5W(single light) = 4.
If you consider florescent tube or CFLs, they provide 60
lumens per watt, but in all directions. So you need more than
35W to get sufficient lighting.
FACTORS AFFECTING THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT
Quantity of number of LED lights required per room also depends on
following factors
•Color shade: Dark shade of wall requires more lights
•Height of ceiling: More heights require more lights.
•Objects: Lots of furniture, display items, complex geometry requires
more lights.
•Wastage: Light very close to wall will waste more amount of light by
reflection. You have to install more lights in this case
•Amount: More small lights distributed in room can give good
illumination than one big light.
MOOD LIGHTING
• Use of lighting patterns of varying levels of illumination, and of color
in the light source and in the illuminated object, it is possible to
produce certain moods such as solemnity, restfulness, activity,
warmth, Coolness
• The lamps themselves can be used to dramatize elements of interior
HIGHER LEVEL OF LIGHTING CREATING
design—line, form, color, pattern, and texture.
CHEERFUL ATMOSPHERE
• Higher levels of lighting – generally produce cheerful effects and
stimulate people to alertness and activity,
• lower levels of lighting – tend to create an atmosphere of relaxation,
DIRECT LIGHTING
intimacy, and restfulness.
(CREATING SENSE OF
SOFT LIGHTING ALERTNESS BY
CREATING CONTRST )

• Soft lighting is diffused light that minimizes harsh shadows

and provides a more relaxing and less visually compelling
atmosphere. Too much diffused lighting lacks in interest and
can make a room dull looking.
• Hard lighting or direct lighting can provide highlights and
shadows, and emphasize texture. Usually, direct lighting is
not used as a primary source of illumination, but rather as a
supplement. The shines of metal, reflections of crystal
LOWER LEVEL OF LIGHTING CREATING

CALM AND SOOTHING ATMOSPHERE
CREATING AN ATMOSPHERE
• Colored lighting can enhance an atmosphere – heavily used in stage
sets to create moods. When overdone, colored lights destroy the
appearance of materials and people's coloring.
E.g., It can be noted in some nightclubs.

• To design a more solemn atmosphere, we can use subdued patterns of

light but it will be better to emphasize dramatic points in the room to
COLORED LIGHTING
avoid a monotonous effect.

• To achieve a restful effect, use low brightness patterns, no visible light

sources, subdued color, dark upper ceiling, low wall brightness
E.g., bedroom or living room should have built into the lamp designs
lights that emit low levels of illumination to create quiet mood

• By way of contrast, we can develop a sense of alertness and activity,

this can be achieved by employing high levels of illumination with
lighting focused over specific tasks or areas. SOLEMN ATMOSPHERE - OFFICE
E.g., celebrating mood, or a sunny, joyous mood, the sparkle of
reflections from objects and bright lights helps to make
light of an environment.

ALERTNESS IN THE ENVIRONMENT

WARM LIGHTING – GIVING • For imparting a sense of warmth, use colors at the red end of the
RESTFUL EFFECT spectrum—pink, orange, amber, yellow.
• For coolness, use colors at the cool end such as violet, blue, and green.
MOOD MOOD AND COLOUR

Happiness A bright and vibrant yellow, most closely associated with

the sun and flowers, is thought to bring joy and
cheer. Add a bright pop of yellow anywhere you want
more of this cheery energy in your life.
Energy A vibrant and invigorating orange, most closely
associated with fire and the sunrise, is thought to bring
vitality and aliveness. Add a bright pop of
orange anywhere you want more of this uplifting energy
in your life.
Serenity A clear and lighter blue, most closely associated with the
sea and surf, is thought to bring calm and peace. Add a
cool hue of aqua blue anywhere you want more of this
meditative energy in your life.
Tranquility A deep and restful blue, most closely associated with the
oceans and night sky, is thought to bring rest and
quiet. Add a deep sapphire blue anywhere you want
more of this grounding and restful energy in your life.
OFFICES
1) GENERAL RECOMMENDATION
• Average illuminance in non working areas should not be less than 50% of the level for the working areas,
with the minimum of 350 lux.
• Ratio between average illuminances for any 2 adjacent areas should not exceed 5:1. For example :- office
and adjacent corridor.
• a higher colour temperature(colder colour appearanc) is preferred at higher lighting levels. In the absence
of daylight a lower colour temperature( warm appearance) is preferred.
• In warmer climates, the personal preference is usually for higher colour temperatures, while in cooler
climates, the preference is more for lower colour temperatures

Initial investment and maintenance is cheaper in T12 and T8 while T5 tube lights are
significantly expensive.
T5 tube lights comparatively consume less energy than T12 and T8s.

T5 tube lights have 50% more life span than T8 and T12 tube lights
• Utilization is often measured in CU (co-efficiency of utilization) which is the ratio of light fallen on the plane or
surface to the total light emitted from the light bulb.
• Performance of T5 tube lights is little more than T8 and T12 tube lights

• CRI is color rendering index used to represent color and nature of the light emitted.
• The more CRI, the whiter the light is. So, T8 and T5 tube lights emit bright day light that is pleasant. But, since T5s
are thinner and smaller they glare and are harsh on eyes.

Building Automation Systems
Building automation is the automatic centralized control of a
building's heating, ventilation and air conditioning and humidity control
and ventilation systems, security, fire safety, lighting (especially
emergency lighting) in a building and other systems through a Building
Management System (BMS) or Building Automation System (BAS).

Some of these devices can be factory mounted (or embedded), while

others are installed in the building. A building controlled by a BAS is
often referred to as an “intelligent building” or "smart building“.

OBJECTIVES AND NECESSITY

OF BUILDING AUTOMATION BASIC ELEMNTS AND WORKING

•A device that makes decisions is usually

•Efficient operation of called a controller.
building systems, •The devices that collect information are
•Reduction in energy called sensors.
consumption and •The devices that act to control the
operating costs, equipment are called actuators.
•Maintaining the building
safety,
•Healthy and comfortable
for its occupants, and The information from the sensors to the
•Extending the equipment controller and from the controller to the
life. actuators travel over communication
channels, which are usually wires, radio
signals or complex networks.

HVAC SYSTEMS
AIR HANDLING SYSTEMS

 Constant Air Volume (CAV) system

o Constant airflow rate in the zone
o Meet varying loads with varying supply air temperature
o Ideal for single zone HVAC system (home, theatre, wedding
hall)
o Air temperature is varied by controlling the cooling liquid
flow
 Variable Air Volume (VAV) system
o Constant air temperature in the zone
o Meet varying loads with varying supply airflow rate
o Ideal for multi-zone HVAC system (buildings)
o Air flow rate is controlled with the help of automated
dampers, VFD’s for blower, as commanded by the zone
thermostats

Resistance thermometers, also called resistance

temperature detector (RTDs), are sensors used to
measure temperature.The material has a
predictable change in resistance as the
temperature changes and it is this predictable
change that is used to determine temperature.

FIRE ALARM SYSTEM & BAS
FIRE SPRINKLERS SMOKE DETECTORS
IONISATION SMOKE DETECTOR

 Fire detection systems are integrated

with door locks and with HVAC fan
and damper controls for smoke
management Flaming
 Fire alarm system can command the fire
HVAC control system to enter into
smoke control mode and then the
HVAC controllers manage the PHOTO-ELECTRIC SMOKE DETECTOR
equipment.
 BAS can transmit this data to fire stations
and fire trucks – significantly improves
response time, save more lives, reduce
property loss
