TWO WAY SLAB
 Two way slabs are the slabs that are supported on
four sides.
 The loads will be carried in both the directions so ,
main reinforcement is provided in both direction for
two way slabs.
 The ratio of longer span to shorter span is less than
2.
Advantages:
 Simple framework.
 No beams-simplifying under floor services outside the
drops.
 Minimal structural depth.

Disadvantages:
 Drop panels may inerfere with larger mechanical
ducting.
 Vertical penetrations need to avoid area around
coloumns.

FLAT SLAB
 Flat slab are also known as beamless slab, is a type
of slab in which the flooring slab is directly
supported on columns without agency of beams.
 This is appropriate for heavier loads .
 Highly versatile elements used in construction
,providing minimum depth , fast construction and
allowing flexible column grids.
 They are provided in theatres ,factories, mills ,
shopping complex and other buildings.
Types of flat slabs
 Slabs without drops and column heads.
 Slabs with drops.
 Slabs with drops and column with column heads.
USE OF COMPONENTS OF FLAT SLAB
Uses of columns heads
 Increase shear strength of slab.
 Reduce the moment in slab by
reducing the clear or effective
span.

Uses of drop panels

 Increase shear strength of slab.
 Increase negative moment
capacity.
 Stiffen the slab and hence
reduce deflection.
PUNCHING SHEAR
 Always a critical consideration in flat slab design
around the columns.
 Shear reinforcement in the form of shear heads ,
studs or stirrup cages may be embedded in slab to
enhance shear capacity at edges of columns.
COLOUMN STRIP AND MIDDLE STRIP
 Column strip means a design strip having a width of
0.25L1 or 0.25L2 whichever is less.
 The remaining middle portion which is bound by
the column strips is called middle strip.
FRAMEWORK :
Thickness of flat slab
 Controlled by consideration of span to effective
depth ratios
 For slabs with drops the span to effective depth
ratios obtained in account of provisions shall be
multiplied by 0.9.
 For this purpose ,the longer span shall be considered
 The minimum thickness of flat slab is 125.
Direct design method
Conditions-
 there must be atleast 3 continuous spans in each
direction.
 Panels should be rectangular and ratio of longer span
to shorter span within a panel shouldn’t exceed 2.
 Design live load must not exceed three times the design
load.
 The successive span lengths in each direction must not
differ by more than one third of the longer span.
Design moment for a span

Mo=(WLn \ 8)

where Mo=sum of positive and negative

bending moment
W= total design load.
Ln=clear span
