INTRODUCTION
 Casting is a process in which molten liquid metal will be
allowed to solidify in predefined mould cavity.
 It is first step in making most of the products
 Ex. Cylinder block of an I.C. engine, gas turbine blades, jet
engine parts, propeller shaft, hollow cylinder pipes,
automobile pistons, crank case, toys, hollow statue etc

PATTERN
 It is replica of a final casting to be produces with some
allowances.
 Pattern materials:
 Wood
 Metal
 Plastic
 Types of pattern-
 Solid pattern
 Split piece pattern
 Loose piece pattern
 Gated pattern
 Sweep pattern
 Follow board pattern
(SPLIT PATTERN)
(SWEEP PATTERN)

(COAP AND DRAG PATTERN)

MOULDING
 Moulding is nothing but the mould preparation activities
for receiving molten metal.
 Moulding usually involves: (i) preparing the consolidated
sand mould around a pattern held within a supporting
metal frame, (ii) removing the pattern to leave the mould
cavity with cores.
 Mould cavity is the primary cavity.
 The mould cavity contains the liquid metal and it acts as a
negative of the desired product.
CLASSIFICATION OF THE CASTING
TECHNIQE
 Expandable moulds-
 Sand moulding, shell moulding, investment casting, full
moulding
 Permanent moulds-
 Centrifugal casting, die casting, slush casting, squeeze
casting
 Continious casting-
(EXPANDABLE MOULD)

(PERMANENT MOULD)
ADVANTAGES
 Intricate shape of objects
 Simple and less expensive
 Ductile and brittle materials can be produced
 Large size objects ,e.g., machine tool bed, engine
block, road roller etc.
LIMITATION
 Dimensional inaccuracy and surface finish
 Time consuming
 Possibility of gas defects
 Non-uniform mechanical properties due to cooling
mechanism
