FLASH DRIVES AND MEMORY

TECHNOLOGY

USB Flash Drives are small, portable storage devices that can
be used to store and transport moderate amounts of data.
H I S T O R Y

USB flash drives were invented at M-Systems,

April 5, 1995
an Israeli company. The product was
announced by the company in September
2000, and was first sold by IBM in 8MB
capacity starting December 15, 2000.
TYPES

• USB 1.0 (1st generation )

• USB 2.0 (2nd generation)
• USB 3.0 (3rd generation)
ADVANTAGES
USB flash drive are capacity and size.

Less prone to damage / Durable

A flash drive can usually endure water damage.

Cheaper/Affordable than traditional drives in small storage

capacities.
DISADVANTAGES

CORRUPTION

Flash memory cells have a limited number of write and erase cycles before
failing.

Flash drives do not have a write-protection mechanism.

OPTICAL STORAGE

Optical storage is any storage method that uses a laser

to store and retrieve data from optical media.

Optical discs like Blu-ray are losing favor, but Sony

and Panasonic don't seem to care. The companies have
cranked up the storage capacity on optical media to a
stunning 3.3TB.
The 3.3TB media is part of Sony's second-
generation Optical Disc Archive System, a
successor to the original system launched in
2013. Sony also announced optical drives to
support the new media. The new drives are
faster than predecessors and generic Blu-ray
drives, which have notoriously slow read
and write times.

However, support remains for this form of

optical storage because of reliability. Sony
says the media will have a 100-year shelf
life, longer than other storage technology.
H I S T O R Y

The first CDs came out in 1982 with a

capacity of 650MB, and DVDs came out in
1996 with a capacity of 4.7GB.

Today's Blu-ray media can store up to 100GB

of data, and earlier this year, Sony and
Panasonic said they will ship 300GB media
for optical archival systems in data centers.
CD-ROM
(Compact Disc, Read-Only-Memory)

CDs have Read-Only

Memory that can hold
around 800MB of data.
Compact Disc The data cannot be
edited or deleted once its
added to the disc. CDs
are non-volatile.
DVD Drive
Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)

DVDs gave Random-Access Memory. They can

hold up to a total of 4.7GB of data.
HD DVD
•High-density DVD (HD-
DVD) disc can hold
around15GB of data
Blu - Ray Disc

Blu-Ray discs are a recent replacement of DVDs. These disc can

hold from 25 – 50GB of data. A dual-layer can hold up 100GB.
