Transformations: Linear

or Not?
Transformations: like Functions
A transformation T assigns an output, T(v) for every input
vector v in a subspace or space V.

A transformation is linear if for every v and w,

◦ T(v+w)= T(v) + T(w)
◦ T(cv)=cT(v)
Domain and Range
A transformation can go from R3 to R2 or from R3 to R or, in
general, from Rn to Rm

Columnspace, Nullspace
The columnspace of a transformation T is equivalent to the
range of T.

The nullspace of a transformation T (namely, all vectors that

after being transformed will give the zero vector) is called
the kernel of T.
What is the kernel?
