The Battle of the Trench took place after the campaign against Banu Nadir, who had been

expelled from Madina for their treachery and who had mostly joined their Jewish
brethren in Khaybar.
In the fifth year of Hijra, a group of those Jews including Sallam ibn Abi al-Huqayq and Huyayy ibn Akhtab, together with a number of Banu Wa’il, left for Makka. They urged
the Quraysh to make war on the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, and promised help and support.
The Jewish group then went to the tribes of Ghatafan and Qays Aylan and guaranteeing them help also, encouraged them to fight against God’s Messenger.4
These intrigues of the Jews resulted in the formation of a great confederacy against Islam. It consisted of the Makkan polytheists, the desert tribes of central Arabia, the Jews
previously expelled for treacheries from Madina, the Jews (Banu Qurayza) remaining in Madina, and the hypocrites led by ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. The last two constituted a
treacherous network within Madina.
When God’s Messenger, upon him be peace and blessings, heard, through his intelligence service, of the gathering of the allies or confederates (ahzab) against him, and the strength
of their desire to fight against him, he consulted his Companions, as he always used to do. It was their unanimous view that they should remain in Madina and fight from there. Salman
al-Farisi suggested to God’s Messenger that they should dig a trench around Madina.
The trench took six days of feverish work to dig. God’s Messenger had divided them into groups of ten people and put them to a competition. It was a hard task and time was
restricted; what was more, hunger struck them all; yet all the Companions worked enthusiastically. In order not to feel hunger, each fastened a rock around his belly. While
digging they recited:
We are those people who took the oath of allegiance to Mohammad; Therefore we shall fight in the way of God As long as we live.

Battle of Trench took place in 627, 5th year of Hijra. The pagans attacked Madina because they wanted to eliminate Islam and to reopen the caravan route blocked by the Muslims.
This time they were not alone. The other pagan tribes like Banu Bakr and the Jews of Khyber were also with them. They prepared a large army of more than ten thousand.

When the Prophet (sw) came to know about this plan, he took advice from his companions. Salman Farsi (ra) advised the Prophet (saw) to dig a Trench around the three openings
of Madina. The trench was prepared within twenty days before the attack. It was about five miles long, five meters wide and five meters deep.

The Pagans’ army could not cross the trench and stopped. They stayed outside Madina for a month. During this time, they had internal differences. The expenditures were high and
Arabs were not used to fight this kind of war of trenches. Finally Allah sent a wind storm and the united army of pagans and Jews ran away.

The last tribe of Jews in Madina Banu Quraiza deceived Muslims and attacked the house in which Muslim women and children were staying but they could not succeed. Trench was
the final effort of the Quresh.
“Go forth in the name of Allah and fight whoever disbelieves in Allah. Fight and do not steal, do not be treacherous, do not mutilate, and
do not kill children. When you meet your enemy among the idolaters, then call them to three options.

With much difficulty Hudhayfah crossed the trench and made his way to a circle of Quraysh warriors talking in the darkness. He sat near them, but as there was no fire, no one
noticed him. He then heard Abu Sufyan 's voice: 'Let us go home!' he said. 'We have had enough. The horses and camels are dying, the tents keep blowing away, most of the
equipment has been lost, and we cannot cook our food. There is no reason to stay!' Shortly after hearing this Hudhayfah made his way quickly and quietly back across the trench and
the next morning the Muslims rejoiced to find that what he had overheard had come true-Quraysh and their allies had gone away! The siege of Medina had ended in a great victory
for Islam.
