DEFINITION
• As far back as the early 1900s, John Dewey supported the
"learning by doing" approach to education, which is the
essential element of PBL.

• Today, PBL is viewed as a model for classroom activity that


shifts away from teacher-centered instruction and emphasizes
student-centered projects.

• is an instructional approach built upon learning activities and


real tasks that have brought challenges for students to solve.
REASONS TO USE PBL
• Puts students in a position to use the
knowledge that they get.
• Effective in helping students understand,
apply, and retain information.
• Can give students an opportunity to work
with professional experts who enrich and
support the teachers knowledge and how it
connects to the real world
CHARACTERISTICS
• Organized around a p rob le m or challenge with out a predetermined
solution

• Creates a need to k now o f essential content and skills

• Students design the process for reaching a solution

• Requires critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration , and various


form s of communication.

• Provides the opportunity for student s to examine the task from different
perspectives using a variety of resources , separate relevant from irrelevant
in formation , and manage the information they gather.
PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IDEAS

• Work out a modern school library system that encourages students to read

• Create an interactive family tree with voice-overs from family members.

• Film a documentary on a social issue few people see

• Redesign the complete school, including new content areas, grading,


collaboration and community involvement

• Solve your parent’s problem of being too busy.

• Artfully illustrate the global history of civil rights
