Continuous gravity decanter

 Principle of decanter
 Immiscible of liquid
 Types of decanter
 Different types of continuous gravity decanter
 Explanation of continuous gravity decanter
 Calculation of continuous gravity decanter
 Use of decanter in industry
Continuous gravity decanter

The operating principle of decanter is based on

separation via density and also ratio of density
of separating components
Naturally a component with a higher density
would fall to the bottom of mixture,While the less
dense component would be suspended above
it.
Continuous gravity decanter
CONTINUOUS GRAVITY DECANTER

IMMISCIBLE LIQUIDS
Immiscible is the property where two substances
are not capable of combining to form mixture
Example
Oil and water , Water and alcohol
Continuous gravity decanter
Continuous gravity decanter

Basically there is two types of decanter

One is continuous gravity decanter
And the second one is centrifugal decanter
 The feed mixtures enter at one end of the separator ,the
two liquid flow slowly through the vessel, separates into
two layer and discharge through the overflow lines at
the other end of separator
 Provided the overflow lines are so large that the
fractional resistance to the flow of liquid is negligible
they discharge at the same pressure
 position of liquid-liquid interface in the separator
depends on the ratio of densities of the two liquids and
on the elevations of the overflow lines
 It is independent of rates of flow of liquid
DERIVATION OF AN EQUATION
DERIVATION OF AN EQUATION

ZA1 =ZA2 –Z B*ǷB /ǷA =Z A2 -(ZT- ZA1)*ǷB /ǷA

Where the total depth of liquid in vessel is ZT = ZB +

ZA1,FROM THIS
ZA1 =ZA2 -ZT*(ǷB/ǷA )/1- ǷB/ǷA
The above mentioned equation show that it depend on
ratios of two liquid and on the elevation of overflow lines
Derivation of equation

The size of decanter is established by the time

required for separation, which in turn depends
on difference between densities

 t =100 ŋ /ǷA -ǷB

 t =separation time
 ŋ =viscosity of the continuous phase
Types of decanter
IT is used in sugar industry
It is used in pharmaceutical industry
It is used for making wines
It is used in food industry
