FORMS OF LIGHTING

ALCOVE LIGHTING
• An alcove is a small area of a room which is
formed by one part of a wall being built further
back than the rest of the wall.
SOFFIT LIGHTING
• This is refers to built in light source under a
panel. It may be fixed to a ceiling or under a
cabinet. Soffit lighting is often used over a sink
or other work areas.
VALANCE LIGHTING
• A horizontal fluorescent tube is placed behind
a valance boards, casting light upward so that
it reflects off the ceiling also downwards to
shine on the drapery , thus producing both
direct and indirect light
CORNICE LIGHTING
• Installed under the ceiling, with a fixture
hidden beneath so as to direct light
downwards only. This can give a dramatic
effect on drapery, picture and wall coverings.
EXAMPLES OF LIGHTING
THREE POINT LIGHTING
• is a standard method
used in visual media
such as video, film, still
photography and
computer-generated
imagery.
KEY LIGHT

This is the main light. It is usually

the strongest and has the most
influence on the look of the
scene. It is placed to one side of
the camera/subject so that this
side is well lit and the other side
has some shadow.
FILL LIGHT
• This is the secondary light and is
placed on the opposite side of
the key light. It is used to fill the
shadows created by the key. The
fill will usually be softer and less
bright than the key. To achieve
this, you could move the light
further away or use some spun.
You might also want to set the fill
light to more of a flood than the
key.
BACK LIGHT
• The back light is placed behind
the subject and lights it from the
rear. Rather than providing direct
lighting (like the key and fill), its
purpose is to provide definition
and subtle highlights around the
subject's outlines. This helps
separate the subject from the
background and provide a three-
dimensional look.
TOP LIGHTING/DOWN LIGHTING

• is another common lighting

technique. TOP LIGHTING is when
the upper areas of a subject are
lit (outlined) by a source
generating from above it.
UNDER LIGHTING/UP LIGHTING

• is the approach of
lighting a subject from
a point below the
subjects in the scene.
ADVANTAGES
OF LIGHTING
1. SAFETY
SAFETY IS THE ESSENTIAL ADVANTAGE OF
LIGHTING. BY ILLUMINATING ROADS, PARKS
AND OTHER PUBLIC SPACES, WE REDUCE
THE RISKS OF ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES.
LIGHTING IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR
DRIVING IN THE NIGHT. WHETHER DRIVING
ON THE MOTORWAY OR IN RESIDENTIAL
AREAS, GOOD LIGHTING IMPROVES
VISIBILITY AND MINIMISES THE RISK OF
ACCIDENTS.
2.BEAUTIFICATION
WHEN PLANNING AND
DEVELOPING ARCHITECTURAL
OR LOCATION BASED
LANDMARKS A KEY ASPECT TO
FACADE/LANDSCAPE DESIGN
IS LIGHTING. WELL DESIGNED
LIGHTING CAN ENHANCE
LANDMARKS LIKE
BOARDWALKS, PROMENADES,
SEA FRONT OR LAKE FRONTS.
THESE CREATE BEAUTIFUL
AMBIENCES AND ADD CHARM
TO THE NIGHT TIME FACADES
AND ARCHITECTURAL VIEWS
OF THE CITY.
3. REDUCE CRIME
PEOPLE WORKING IN NIGHT SHIFTS, STUDENTS
FINISHING UP LATE IN THE NIGHT AT UNIVERSITY,
HAPPY-GO-LUCKY WALKING BACK HOME
AFTER A NIGHT OUT ARE ALL SUBJECT TO THE
RISK OF CRIME AND VIOLENCE. WHILE THERE
ARE MANY MEASURES TAKEN TO ENSURE
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY, IT IS QUITE NATURAL FOR
PEOPLE TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE IF THE
LIGHTING IS INSUFFICIENT. WELL LIT AREAS ARE
KNOWN TO REDUCE THE CHANCES OF CRIME.
A BRIGHTLY LIT PARK OR PATHWAY DETERS
CRIMINALS AND BOOSTS THE CONFIDENCE OF
PEDESTRIANS.
5. HISTORIC IMPACT
WELL-LIT HISTORIC DETAILS DRAW
ATTENTION TO THE UNIQUENESS OF AN
AREA. INCLUDING LIGHTING DESIGN FOR
HISTORICAL LANDMARKS HAVE
MANIFOLD BENEFITS. BESIDES THE
OBVIOUS TOURIST ATTRACTION, THESE
GIVE LOCALS A GREAT SENSE OF PRIDE
ABOUT THEIR HISTORY AND ARE ALSO
KNOWN TO HAVE ECONOMIC BENEFITS.
CLINK STREET TUNNEL IN LONDON
CREATES A SENSE
OF DRAMA
OF COURSE IF THE BUILDING
AND CITY ARE WELL KNOWN,
THE RIGHT KIND OF LIGHTING IS
THE “CHERRY ON THE TOP”.
THERE IS NO EXAMPLE BETTER
THAN THE “LIGHTING THE SAILS”
AT SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE. THIS
FORM OF ILLUMINATION,
WHICH HAS BEEN MET WITH
UNANIMOUS, WORLDWIDE
SUCCESS.

THE DRAMATIC LIGHTING OF

THE SAILS OF THE OPERA
HOUSE GAINED WIDESPREAD
POPULARITY WITH THE 2012
VIVID SYDNEY SMART LIGHTING
FESTIVAL.
7.COMMUNITY
BETTER LIGHTING MAKES SAFER SPACES AND
CREATE SPACES FOR INTERACTION. LIGHTING
PLAYS AN INTEGRAL ROLE IN COMMUNITY
BUILDING.
8.ACCESSIBILITY
SPACE FOR ACCESS AND INCLUSION HAVE
GAINED RELEVANCE. ALL LEVELS OF URBAN
PLANNING NOW INCLUDE METHODS TO
CREATE ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSION.
LIGHTING IS A PRIMARY TOOL TO HELP
ACHIEVE THIS.
DISADVANTAGES
OF LIGHTING
DISADVANTAGES OF LIGHTING

NATURAL LIGHTING
• The health of a human.
• Skin cancer

ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING
• Environment
DISADVANTAGES OF LIGHTING

USE OF INCANDESCENT LAMPS/ BULB

• The most troublesome aspect of incandescent lights is
its indiscriminatw use of energy. 90% of the energy
used is dissipated as heat- only about 10% is released
as light.
DISADVANTAGES OF LIGHTING

USE OF FLUORESCENT LAMPS

• Fluorescent lamps with magnetic ballasts flicker at a normally noticeable
frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. This flickering can cause problems for some
individuals with light sensitivity. Such lamps are listed as problematic
for some individuals with AUTISM, EPILEPSY, LUPUS, CHRONIC
FATIGUE SYNDROME, LYME DISEASE, AND VERTIGO.

• Ultraviolet radiation emitted by fluorescent lighting can increase an

individual’s exposure to carcinogenic radiation by 10 to 30 percent per
year.
DISADVANTAGES OF LIGHTING

USE OF COMPACT FLUORESCENT LAMPS

(CFLS) AND LIGHT EMITTIGN DIODE (LEDS)
• Some people with diseases that make them sensitive to light claim that
the energy saving lamps (mainly CFLs and LCDs) that have been
brought to replace incandescent lamps make their symptoms worse and
play a role in a wide range of diseases.
LIGHT POLLUTION
• Also known as PHOTOPOLLUTION, is the presence of anthropogenic light in the night
environment. It is exacerbated by excessive, misdirected or obtrusive uses of light,
but even carefully used light fundamentally alters natural conditions.

EFFECTS ON HUMANS AND ENVIRONMENT

• Washes out starlight in the night sky
• Interferes with astronomical research
• Disrupts ecosystem
• Has adverse health effects
• Waste energy
• Disrupting humans circadian rhythms
• Messing the melatonin levels
• Generally contributing to sleeping disorders
