and older in 2016 which is about a 20%
increase over 2015

Literature Review

● High STD rates among seniors is not a newly discovered


issue-literature dating back to 1990s.
● Misconceptions and lack of awareness among seniors
○ Outdated sex education, no concern for pregnancy, perceptions
of the types people who have STDs
● Misconceptions and lack of awareness among healthcare
professionals
○ Cultural attitude that seniors are uninterested in sex, discomfort
with the topic, fear of offending
○ This can lead seniors to internalize that safe sex is not an
appropriate concern for them.
Smith Senior Center
• Located in Southeast Greensboro
• Offers services to residents of Guildford
County age 55 and over
• “The YMCA for seniors age 55 and above”
● Smith Senior Center aims to provides a
variety of social and health services.
