What is Perception?
•Awareness of something through the senses. In other
words, it’s the ability to see, hear, understand or become
aware of something.

•Describes the way people filter, organize and interpret


sensory information.
What is Attribution?
• Explains how people act, determining how people react
to the actions of others as well.
• The action of regarding something as being caused by a
person or thing
• helps in understanding reasons behind certain
happenings in our life.
Barriers to Perception
• Selective Perception-our tendency to choose information
that supports our view points
• Stereotypes – the person is perceived according to a
single category or group which that person belongs
• Halo effect – the person is perceived on the basis of a
single trait.
• First Impression error – an assessment of an employee
or applicant on the first impression that person made.
Barriers to Perception
• Contrast Effect - when we make decisions, we tend to
do it by contrasting between the decision item and
reference items.
• Projection - compromise the ability to see individual
differences to see people are more homogenous than
they really are.
• Implicit Personality Theories - certain human traits are
associated with one another.
Barriers to Perception
• Self-fulfilling Prophecy or Pygmalion Effect or
Expectancy - tendency to perceive people, objects,
events on the basis of what we expected them to be in
the first place.

• Internal • External factor
– mood, ability - destiny, luck, bias
• Stability • Instability
-continuity of change over a - erratic response
period of time
• Controllable • Uncontrollable
- skill, competency - luck, mood
