ZIGBEE BASED WIRELESS SENSING

PLATFORM FOR MONITORING

AGRICULTURE ENVIRONMENT
ABSTRACT VIEW OF PROJECT

 The main objective of the project is to create a wireless sensor network

environment using Zigbee in order to monitor various parameters like
Temperature, Humidity, Moisture etc.
 The goal here was achieved by connecting two 802.15.4 (ZIGBEE)
transceivers to two microcontroller boards- STM32F411 and STM32F030R8
which were connected to a GUI and a sensor respectively.
NEED FOR THE PROJECT

 Using a wireless sensing platform that monitors various parameters of the

Agricultural environments help in eliminating the need for the farmer to go
and visit the field like they usually do , sometimes in odd hours.
 The system due to the help of various sensors helps in in providing very
accurate and precise reading repeatedly over a period of few seconds ,
thus helping in overall increase in quality and quantity of the farm produce.

XBEE S2C

 Out-of-the-box RF communications, no configurations needed.

 Works on 2.4GHz for easy deployment.
 Indoor Range of 60m-90m, Outdoor/RF LOS Range of 1200m to 3200m in
Mesh Network.
 Point-to-multipoint network topology can be applied easily.
 Low power consumption of 10-100 milliwatts(mW), far better than Bluetooth
and Wi-Fi.
 Easily configurable through XCTU.
SOIL MOISTURE SENSOR

 The Soil Moisture Sensor FC-28 consists of two probes which are used to
measure the volumetric content of water. These two probes allow the
current to pass through the soil and gets the resistance value to measure
the moisture content .
 When there is more water, the soil will conduct more electricity which mean
the resistance will be less. Therefore, the moisture content will be higher.
 Dry soil will conduct electricity poorly, so when there will be less water , then
the soil will conduct less electricity, which means the moisture content is
low.
WHY ZIGBEE?

We could have also used Wi-Fi and Wi-Max which would have increased coverage
and expandability drastically as compared to the ZIGBEE , but that would have also
increased the cost and the power consumption. So Zigbee was used as it is cost
effective and consume much less power as compared to either Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
In comparison to the battery life Wi-Fi would last hours on the same power supply on
which the Zigbee would last months.
Also the range is not too bad either (70 m) which is more than enough for a network
mesh to be generated.
The complexity is easy for a Zigbee as compared to Wi-Fi.

Conclusion

 The project will transmit the data regarding the moisture content to a
Screen/GUI , which can be remotely placed as per convenience through
the help of Zigbee S2C. We can set the interval duration between readings
as per our convenience.
Future Scopes

 We might add various sensors as per our requirements :PIR sensor, Humidity
Sensor, Temperature Sensor, Alkalinity Sensor.
 In order for day to day use we might have to use this in a air-tight box in
order to protect the electrical components from Water Damage.
 We may create a URL address and display the parameters on that so that it
can be easily accessible.
