GEAR TOOTH VERNIER CALLIPER OR

CHORDAL THICKNESS METHOD

 A gear tooth vernier is widely used to measure
the tooth thickness. As the tooth thickness
varies from top to the bottom, any instrument
for measure on a single tooth must :
(1) Measure the tooth thickness at a specified
position on the tooth, and
(2) Fix the position at which the measurement
is taken.
 The gear tooth vernier calliper is an instrument
similar to the ordinary vernier calliper but having a
second beam at right angle to the main beam as
shown in figure. This additional beam carries a
tongue sliding between the jaws. which can
vertically slid up and down so that when it rests
on the top of a tooth, the tips of the jaws are at
the correct distance from the tooth flank from the
required measurement. The reading on the
horizontal vernier scale gives the value of chordal
thickness (w) and the reading on the vertical
vernier scale gives the value of chordal addendum
(h). These measured values are then compared
with the calculated values.
 The values of width (w) and addendum height (h) can be
obtained as follows.
AB = w and CE = h
Now, AD + DB = w But as AD = DB
w = 2 (AD)
From

Angle

When N = Number of teeth,

Substituting value of AD in equation (5.1), we get

Module,

Substituting value of R in equation (5.2), we get

Width,
The height h, can be calculated as follow :
From the fig. 5.12,
OC = OE + EC

But and EC = addendum = module =

m
( for metric gear, addendum =
m)
From fig. 5.12,
OC = OD + DC

From

Substituting value of OC and OD from equations (5.4)

and (5.6) in equation (5.5), we get
But DC = h

Depth,

Limitations :
1) Accuracy is limited by the least count of instrument, the
vernier itself is not reliable to closer than 0.05mm or
perhaps 0.025mm with practice.
2) The measurements depend on two vernier readings,
each of which is a function of the other.
3) The wear during use is concentrated on the jaws, the
calliper has to be calibrated at regular intervals to
maintain the accuracy of measurement.
