Ethics and Leadership

• What is Ethics ?
A Greek word derived from “ethos” which means
character.
Basically, Ethics is a branch of philosophy that studies
the difference between right and wrong.

• What is Leadership?
The activity of leading a group of people or
an organization or the ability to do this.
OR
Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to
act towards achieving a common goal.

• Leadership involves following steps :


1. establishing a clear vision.
2. sharing that vision with others so that they will follow willingly.
3. providing the information.
4. knowledge and methods to realize that vision.
• Ethics and leadleadership,
1. Has to do what leaders do and who leaders are.
2. It is concerned with the nature of leader’s behavior and
virtuousness.
3. What choices leaders make and how they respond In a particular
circumstances are informed and directed by their ethics.
• Centrality of Ethics to leadership :
• Respect for persons
Sensitive to follower’s own interest and needs.
• Influence dimension
of leadership requires the leader to have an
impact on the lives of followers.
• An Ethical climate
Leaders help to establish organizational values.
Servant Leadership
• Definition :
servant leadership A leadership style marked by going beyond
the leader’s own self-interest and instead focusing on opportunities to help
followers grow and develop.And may be more prevalent and more effective
in certain cultures.
• Example:
U. S. Subjects tend to draw them in front of the group, giving
orders to followers. Singaporeans tend to draw leaders at the back of the
group, acting more to gather a group’s opinions together and then unify
them from the rear. This suggests that East Asian proto-type is more like a
servant leader, which might mean servant leadership is more
effective in these cultures.
