HORIZENTAL WELLS
Horizontal wells are high-angle wells (with an
inclination of generally greater than 85°)
drilled to enhance reservoir performance by
placing a long wellbore section within the
reservoir.
HORIZENTAL WELLS
ADVANTAGES OF HORIZENTAL WELLS
The advantages of horizontal wells include:
Reduced water and gas coning because of
reduced drawdown in the reservoir for a
given production rate
Increased production rate because of the
greater wellbore length.
Reduced pressure drop around the wellbore.
Lower fluid velocities around the wellbore.
A general reduction in sand production from
a combination of Items 3 and 4.
Larger and more efficient drainage pattern
leading to increased overall reserves
recovery.
DISADVANTAGES OF
HORIZENTAL WELLS
High cost as compared to a vertical well
only one zone at a time can be produced using a
horizontal well.
Hole cleaning problem.
The power needed to turn the drill string or to pull
it out of the hole are higher on horizontal well than
on a normally deviated or vertical well.
CONING
Coning is a term used to describe the
mechanism of underlying the upward
movement of water or the downward
movement of gas into the perforations of a
producing well.
Coning can seriously impact the well
productivity, influence the degree of depletion
and the overall recovery efficiency.
