G One of Hong Kong's most respected and best-liked
G actresses, Maggie Cheung has done it all.
I
E
Born in Hong Kong on September 20, 1964, Cheung’s
C family moved to England where she studied. She
H returned to Hong Kong and by accident entered
E modeling, which led to doing TV commercials and her
U winning first runner-up and Miss Photogenic for the Miss
N Hong Kong Contest 1983. She then broke into cinema
G with a number of comedies and action films, gaining
exposure in Police Story I with Jackie Chan.

But Cheung was able to prove herself as a dramatic

actress when she played in Song of the Exile (1990) and
in Wong Kar-Wai’s As Tears Go By (1988) and Days of
Being Wild (1991). In 1992, Cheung won great acclaim
for Stanley Kwan's Centre Stage.

G Cheung broke through to international critics and
G audiences in Irma Vep (1996). In 1997, she made her
I first English-language film, starring alongside Jeremy
E Irons and Gong Li in Wayne Wang's Chinese Box, and
won further acclaim for Comrades, Almost a Love Story.
C
H Cheung cemented her status as a legend and icon of
E world cinema as she went on to become the most
U internationally awarded Chinese actress in history,
N
winning, among others, Best Actress at the 1992 Berlin
G
Festival for Centre Stage, and later, the Palme D’Or Best
Actress prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, for Olivier
Assayas's Clean. She also captured the imagination of
world cinema fans in her numerous “qi pao” dresses in
Wong Kar Wai's acclaimed In the Mood for Love,
becoming a global paragon of Chinese elegance and an
inspiration to artists and creators the world over.
