Project: Classroom interaction and teacher
talk: A Self Discovery

• In this project, you will conduct a mini

research which investigates your own
classroom interaction and teacher talk. You
will:
• 1. Analyse how you conduct classroom
interactions , and
• 2. Reflect on its implication on second
language acquisition NOT on your teaching
Transcription
• Transcribed partner’s lesson.
• DONE
The Report Components: Introduction
• Each pair will find current literature,
preferably empirical studies, on topics related
to the research questions, and summarize
them.
• This ‘literature review’ will be written up as a
short introductory section in your report.
• Cite the sources in-text in the APA style used
by journal articles. Provide a reference list in
APA style.
The Report Components: Data
Collection Procedures
• Combine the information on each person’s
data collection procedure, including the
class/students, topic/objective of the lesson
on the day of recording, and how the
recording was done.
• Summarize briefly.
The Report Components: Analysis
I. What is the proportion of teacher talk to student talk?
II.What is the proportion of display questions to
referential questions?
III.What is the average “wait time” for answering
questions? (Analyse a 15-minute segment)
i. For I-III, analyse your data sets, i.e. for Teacher A, B,
C. Quantify, then describe by comparing and
contrasting findings. (Refer to Zhu & Liu 2012 as a
guide)
The Report Components: Analysis
I. How does each teacher’s classroom interaction increase
or decrease the potential/opportunities for learning?

• 5.1 To answer Question IV, find evidence of

some of the classroom interaction features given
in Walsh’s section IV Construction and V
Obstruction, and/or features from class readings
related to interaction/negotiation of meaning.
Extract segments of transcript that illustrate the
features concerned and discuss what they show
in relation to questions IV.
Findings
1.Provide objective reporting of answers to questions
I-IV, illustrating with summary tables and
vignettes (extracts from transcripts).
Discussion
• Summarize the findings and discuss by
comparing and relate findings with some of
the literature in the introduction.
Conclusion: Self-discovery
• Each group member will have your own
conclusion section, where you will summarize
your style of classroom interaction and
provide an objective commentary/reflection
on possible positive or negative influences of
your personal style on your own students’
English language acquisition.
Readings
• Zhu and Liu – sample
• Walsh – sample
• Thornbury – justification of project
• And I have uploaded 2 more relevant research which
may be used for literature review.
• Turnitin will be used in this assignment.
• The index should not exceed 20%. Plagiarism will result
in a serious penalty for group members or individuals
depending on the sections. Copying your own work is
also plagiarism. You will not be allowed to rewrite.
