The Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point in the American Civil War that took place from July 1-3, 1863 near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Over 51,000 casualties resulted from intense fighting over those three days as Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia engaged the Union Army of the Potomac. On the third and final day, Pickett's Charge, a massive but failed Confederate infantry assault, halted Lee's invasion of the North and marked the closest they came to victory. The battle ended with a Union triumph that stopped Confederate momentum and turned the tide of the war in favor of the Union.
