A VILLAGE BY THE

SEA
(THE THEME
Presented OF
by: ADAPTATION TO
CHANGE)Fluffies
Hari • Due to the responsibilities that he
carried on his shoulders, he ran away to
Bombay in utter desperation.
• Although he was all alone, he was able
to work there at Sri Krishna Eating
House without changing and forgetting
his family and origin.
• He never spent anything there to save
money – not even to go to the cinema
or buy cigarettes.
Hari • Mr. Panwallah acts as a true benefactor
to Hari.
“……… Learn, learn, learn – so that
you can grow and change, Things
change all the time, boy-nothing
remains the same.” (pg. 210)
• Due to these words, he became a
skilled worker and not just an idle
village boy that he was.
• He worked hard and earned enough
money to start a poultry farm at his
place.
Hari • From those instances, we can see that
Hari moved from a village boy to a
skilled and trained worker that is able
to provide advancement to his family
and to his own development.
• Although his initial plan to Bombay was
to run away, he learnt that adapting to
his surroundings and the change of
lifestyle while staying true to himself
can bring benefits toward him.
Lila • Lila was left alone to run the family
after Hari left.
• She matures with her experiences and
learns to adapt to the changing
situations.
• When the De Silva’s arrive and ask for
the services of Hari, she quickly
assumes the duties Hari used to carry
out and gets Mr. de Silva to take her
mother to hospital.
Lila • She does whatever comes in her way
and works tirelessly. She succeeded in
winning the kindness of her employers,
so that they willingly extended their
helping hands to her.
• She was paid for her work and
thoughtful Mr. de Silva arranges her to
be the caretaker of Mr. Sayyid Ali.
• It made their family going until Hari
arrives rich from Bombay.
Lila • Although she was left with her family
to take care of after Hari fled to
Bombay, she was able to adapt to her
new responsibilities as the caretaker of
the family.
• She gives her best in her work and in
the end, she was able to sustain and
support her family until Hari returned
home.
Biju • Biju does not alter his livelihood, but
sought after new horizons within the
same traditional trade.
• Being a technologically minded person,
Biju early saw the importance of having a
boat with a diesel engine, to sail far in to
the sea to catch more and the importance
of having a refrigerator to keep the catch
unspoiled.
• To convince the villagers, he said:-
“ Things have to change. Then they will
improve……….Improve ! Change!”
Biju • Despite his age, he still learnt new
things and used them to improve his
wealth until he emerged triumphantly
in the end.
• Those who could not adapt to the
changes have to work in the factory in
the lowest layer or they are doomed to
live miserable lives, complaining.
Biju • Hence, we can deduce from here that it
is important to change and adapt to
the current situation
• This is because if we wish to get a
different result, then we should change
our normal behaviour.
• For instance in this context, if the
villagers do not change their lifestyle/
thinking/ action, then they will stay
poor forever.
