Plans
Digital Initiation System

The plans are the most important part of ANY system. It

should contain the following
• Hole Positions (as close as possible to the actual block)
• Logging/Tagging order
• Critical structures
• Decked holes
• Damaged dets
• Uncharged Holes
• Any information with regard to the block (runaway holes,
VOD cables etc.)
Plans
Digital Initiation System

Always consider the following:

• A safe place for the Remote Slave
• Blasting point (Where you will get line of sight for
communication)
• Amount of detonators on the block
• Type of tie-up
• Easiest route to the Remote Slave and/or Blasting
Box
Plans
Digital Initiation System

NEVER
• Start tagging/logging without a plan.
• Design timing without a plan
• Use only the tagging/logging unit to design a blast.
.
ALWAYS
• Indicate any relevant information on your plan
• Indicate the logging order (it will make it easier to find
problematic dets)
• DOUBLE CHECK
• DOUBLE CHECK
Bench Preparation
Digital Initiation System

The most important issue to consider during bench

preparation is:

Protect
The

Cables
Bench Preparation
Digital Initiation System

• During bench preparation always check the

procedures when:

1. Priming
2. Charging
3. Stemming
4. Wiring
5. ANY Traffic on the block.

EDD System

• EDD’s are only a part of the whole system!

• The system dictates how easy or complex a brand is
to use
• The system:
– Electronic delay detonators
– A device to allocate a firing time to each detonator
– A blasting box
– Timing design software

Blasting Box (Local):
Where will they be used?
Digital Initiation System

• Small, well controlled blasts which include:

1. Civil Blasts (Rosebank, Menlyn)
2. Cover Blasts
3. Blasts where protection (Blast Bunkers) are close by.

• Bigger, well controlled blasts

1. Fly-rock is controlled with stemming
2. Coal blasts (if well controlled)
3. Soft material (if well controlled)

• Testing of bigger blasts (When remote blasting will be done)

1. The area MUST be cleared of all personnel and equipment
2. The blasters MUST be in a safe position

Programming of Detonators
Block to be cleared of personnel and equipment
Blaster is in a SAFE position
• The detonators are programmed from the Blasting Box
• After Programming, the detonators have to be armed and
energized. For the Capacitors to be energized, you HAVE
to do 2 things
1. Ensure the ARM button is Switched to the ON position
2. The PIN is entered. (Correctly)

• After Charging and Programming, a Status Check

will have to be done.
• The blast will be set off by pressing BOTH the
buttons below the screen.
Remote System: Functions
Digital Initiation System

Remote Slave
• Receives and transmits information between the Remote
Master and detonators.
• Serves as the power supply to the detonators.
Remote Master
• Receives and transmits information between the Remote
Slave and the USER.
• It gives the fire signal for all detonators from the blasting
position.
Remote Link
• Receives and transmits information between the Remote
Slave and Link boxes.
Remote System: Components
Digital Initiation System

• The Remote System consists out of 2 or more boxes.

• The Remote Slave, Link and Remote Master looks exactly
the same.
• The difference is the SETTINGS which are selected by the
USER
• The boxes are interchangeable i.e. You can use one box as
a Slave or Link and the following blast as a Master.
• Remote blasting is one of the safety functions of the AXXIS
system, up to 5km (No line of sight)

Safety
• Two way communication
– Know about damaged detonators before the blast
– Encoded communication
• Only brand and version related equipment can fire the
detonators
• No risk from interference
• High resilience to external electrical energy
– Lightning
• Shocktube 2500 V
• EDD’s, more than 100 000V
