In English aspiration is found at only three
sounds, P, T, and K when these sounds occur at

Aspiration is very like the English sound H
which is why in the international phonetic
alphabet aspiration is indicated with a small
letter H.
forgetting to use aspiration in pronunciation of
the English initial stops /p,t, k/ can cause
confusion in certain contexts.

The situation without aspiration
• First, if /p, t, k/ occuring in the onset of an
initial syllable of a word is preceded by /s/
(spin, stuck, skies).
• Second, if the initial syllable is unstressed
(polite).
• Third, at the end of a word (lip, bit, stick).
