Packing,Package,Packaging

▪ Packing : It is the process of covering wrapping or crating of goods

before they are transported or stores.
▪ Package: It is actual container or wrapper in which the product is
enclosed or sealed
▪ Packaging : it is general group of activities which concentrate in
formulating the design of package and producing an appropriate and
attractive container or wrapper for the product which will protect the
attributes of the product till it is used and/or creates a demand.
Packaging

▪ Two types
1. Consumer Packaging- It is based on marketing considerations in
terms of advertising and sales value.
2. Logistical Packaging-Logistical or industrial or protective
packaging facilitates product flow during manufacturing ,shipping ,handling
and storage.
Logistical Function of packaging

1. Containment – To minimize the weight and space requirements on

the package so that overall logistics costs can be curtailed by means
of minimization of transportation and storage cost.
2. Protection-Packaging protects its route from the manufacturer to
consumer and even during its life with the consumers. It protects
the products from spoil discolor loss of fragrance, damage, break ,
contamination or physical decoration of the products.
The amount of production that a package must provide depends on
the characteristics of the product and condition in the logistical
system.
Product Characteristics + Logistics Hazards = Package Protection
Logistical Function of packaging

3. Utilization- The utility function of packaging relates to how

packaging affects the productivity and efficiency of the
total logistical system.
It describes the physical grouping of master cartons
into one restrains load for material handling or transport.
Productivity = Number of package Output/ Logistical
inputs
Logistical Functions

4. Communication –
The communication function of protective packaging is gaining
importance due to wide and extensive use of logistical information.
Packaging symbols and other data inform buyers about contents,
attributes, weights, storage sizes, Perishables and handling
instructions on product.
Current trends in protective packaging

1. Film Based Packaging- Uses flexible packaging materials to replace

rigid materials such as corrugated fiberboard boxes.
▪ Benefits –
a) Minimum shipment weight and cube
b) Reduction in inventory storage space
c) Less trash ( waste material disposal costs)
d) Less damage and
e) Work best for strong products.
Current Trends in Protective Packaging

▪ Blanket wrapping –
Product surfaces are protected by blankets and stacked decking is erected with
plywood and bars that lock into the trailer walls.
Benefits-
a) Best suitable for truckload quantities of large rugged products such as wood
furniture.
b) Elimination of package materials and waste
c) Minimization of transportation cost
d) Easier unpacking of product

MATERIAL HANDLING

Defination:

Materials handling is the art and science of moving, packing and storing of substances in any
form.
• Creation of time and place utility
• Movement and storage of material at the lowest possible cost through the use of proper
methods and equipments.
• Lifting, shifting and placing of materials which effect a saving in money, time and place
• Art and science of conveying, elevating, positioning, transporting, packaging and storing
of materials
MATERIAL HANDLING
Objectives

• Main objective is to reduce the number of handlings as well as the

overall cost of material handling equipment and reducing the
distances through which the materials are handled.
• Reduction in manufacturing cycle time through
faster movement of materials.
• Lower unit material handling costs.
• Contribute to better quality by avoiding damage to products by ine
fficient handling.
• Increased storage capacity through better utilisation of storage area
s.
MATERIAL HANDLING
Principles:

• Eliminate handling
• Keep moving
• Use simple patterns of material flow
• Carry pay loads both ways
• Carry full loads
• Use gravity

Types Of Material Handling

Wide variety of material handling systems are used by different industr

ial sectors depending upon their needs and requirements. For better u
nderstanding they can be categorized into three groups.

• Mechanized Handling System

• Semi Automated Handling System

• Automated Handling System

MATERIAL HANDLING
Mechanized Handling System

• Forklift
• Tow Tractors
• Cranes

• FORKLIFT
A forklift is a powered industrial
truck used to lift and move
materials over short distances.
MATERIAL HANDLING
Mechanized Handling System

• Tow Tractors
When relatively long hauls of large volume of goods
are required. They can be used either with combination
of forklift or can be moved by hand.

Cranes:
A crane is a type of machine, generally equipped
with a hoist rope, wire ropes or chains, and sheaves, that can be used
both to lift and lower materials
and to move them horizontally. It is mainly used for lifting heavy thing
s and transporting them to other
Places.

Semi Automated Handling System

Semi automated systems supplement mechanical

systems by automating specific handling
requirement.

• Automated Guided Vehicle System (AGVS)

1. Performs same type of handling function as that of to
w tractor.
2. Difference is that it does not require an Operator.
3. Rely on Magnetic or Optical guidance system.
4. In optical application, tape is placed on warehouse an
d equipment is guided by focused light.
5. Magnetic AGVS follows an energized wire installed in
floor.
6. New AGVS use video and Information technology to
