of writing in a style that meets the readers’ expectations.

These styles and concepts apply in writing and affects how your audience
will understand and respond. Since writing style affects how your reader
responds, be aware of and use it to help you achieve your purpose.

■ Keep in mind, however, that shorter is not always better.


PRECISE

■ Statements are verifiable.


■ Statements are specific and meaningful.
■ Descriptors are quantified whenever possible.
■ Word choice accurately represents the level of certainty.
PRECISE
DIRECT

■ It is tempting to write unnecessarily complex sentences in an attempt


to elevate the perception of your expertise, but this can obscure the
message being communicated.

■ Writing unnecessarily complex sentences is tempting when you are


trying to seem smart, but this can make your message less clear.
WELL ORGANIZED
