Martha Schwartz

 An American landscape architect, artist and educator,


author and lecturer.
 Category of works- public parks, corporate landscapes,
urban master plans, waterfronts, private gardens and
art installations.
About  Characteristics of her design- bright colours, sharp
lines and artificial structures.
 Most used materials- stone and plastic.
 Design must be appreciated as a crucial factor in
sustainability. Through design we can create a “sense of
place” and engender a sense of belonging and
individuality.
 She also believes the changing constants in the urban
landscape are crucial to be understood because of the
communities and culture in the surroundings and which
Philosophy is why imbuing space with character, memory and
identity is important.

 She and her team integrate art and climate change with
landscape based technologies and ecology. Their main
aim is to adapt according to the climate change in
landscape.

 Context of site

East – fengxi main road and entrance, highest point
 Create a strong connection between the setting of site
and surrounding backdrop of the mountainous peak.
 The surroundings from which inspiration is drawn
include – valleys of Sichuan basin, the agrarian
Vision patterning of rice paddy terraces, the Chang Jiang river
and the misty sky of chongquing.

 Elemets taken – mountain pavilions, zigzag patterns,


orchestrated terrain and use of vivid colours.
 Extreme topography – difficult to create route from
upper car-park to lower sales area.
 Also provides a unique opportunity to design a
Site conditions dynamic landscape- “mountain”
Structural
analysis
 On arrival from fengxi road, dancing red and oranges
sculptures line the entrance to draw people into the
plaza.
 Each pavilion I’m positioned among the zigzag path
leading pedestrians down the mountain towards the
sales area.
Features  They also provide shade during day and speactacular
light during nights.
 The zigzag patterns create a geological pattern
language as if one is waking up a mountain.
 There are also platforms provided at each turning.
 The zigzag is lined with balusters walls constructed
from large pieces of deeply textured dark concrete to
create a rocky silhouette looking up the hill.
Materials  The crevices or valleys created by the walls become
source for streams which run through.
 The presence of water bodies is an important part of
fengming park and is expressed as flow of water from
the arrival place to sales area.
Water bodies  Many elements such as – channels, pools and jets are
installed to assist with dolling provide sounds and
atmosphere
