Major Securities Markets
1. The New York Stock Exchange and Other U.S. Markets
a. New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
– dominates the other U.S. exchanges in trading value (about 80%).
b. American Stock Exchange (AMEX)
– merged with and became a subsidiary of the National Association of Securities
Dealers (NASD) in 1998.
c. Regional Exchanges
– there are several regional exchanges in the U.S. such as the Chicago Stock
Exchange, the Pacific Stock Exchange, the Boston Stock Exchange and the Honolulu
Stock Exchange Regional exchanges basically serve two purposes:
- To provide trading facilities for local companies that are not large enough to
qualify for listing on the national exchanges, and
- to give local brokers who are not members of a national exchange access to
securities.
