WHAT IS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Intellectual property (IP) is a category of property
that includes intangible creations of the human
intellect, and primarily encompasses copyrights,
patents, and trademarks.
It also includes other type of rights such as trade
secrets, publicity rights ,moral rights and rights
against unfair competition.
PATENT
An intellectual property right granted by the government of a nation
to an inventor that gives him or her the exclusive right to the
invention for up to 20 years, in exchange for disclosing the details
of the new technology to society for its ultimate benefit.

A patent gives its owner the right to exclude others from


making,using,selling and importing an invention for a limited
period of time..
TRADEMARK
A symbol, logo, word, sound, color, design, or
other device that is used to identify a business or a
product in commerce.

COPYRIGHT
Copyright is a form of intellectual property protection provided
by the laws of the United States. Copyright protection is
available for original works of authorship that are fixed in a
tangible form, whether published or unpublished.

So the categories of works that can be protected by copyright


laws include paintings, literary works, live performances,
photographs, movies, and software.
REGISTRATION AND DURATION
• Register a copyright by completing a simple application form,
along with the appropriate fee

• Copyright lasts for the Author’s lifetime + 50 years from the end
of the calendar year in which the author dies
TRADE SECRETS
• A law that requires that the intellectual property to be protected,
not publicly disclosed.
• A trade secret is a formula, practice, process, design, instrument,
pattern, commercial method, or compilation of information not
generally known or reasonably ascertainable by others by which a
business can obtain an economic advantage over competitors or
customers
