1.Introduction:
 Electrical Submersible Pump system is an efficient and reliable artificial-lift method for
lifting moderate to high volumes of fluids from wellbores.
 These volumes range from a low of 150 BPD to as much as 150,000 BPD.
1.Introduction:
 ESP Can be installed in deviated wells(<80 ).
 High and controllable production rates.
 ESP is suitable for high water cut wells.
 No extra flow lines required.
 Efficient energy usage (>50% possible).

 But:
 Susceptible to damage during completion installation.
 ESP is not suitable for low volume wells (<150 BPD).
 Viscous crude reduces pump efficiency.
 Emulsions form over a range of water oil ratios (>80%).
 High temperatures can degrade the electrical motors.
1.Introduction:
 ESP mean components are:
2.Literature Review:
 electrical submersible pumping was invented and developed by Russian engineer named
Armais Arutunoff in the late 1910s.

 The main problems that can face the submersible pumps are:
 WATER CUT.
 HIGH TEMPERATURE.
 GAS PRODUCTION.
 SOLID PRODUCTION.
3.Calculations And Results:
 An Electrical Pump had been designed for vertical producer well located in Basra-Iraq
fields by Prosper at different frequencies and by Autograph Pc at 5o Hz, had the following
data:
GOR 600 SCF/STB ɣg 0.9 H2O 20 %

Pr 3170 Psig API 24o H2S 6%

Pb 2300 Psig T 180o F CO2 2%

Pwf 2340 Psig Perf VD 7724 ft N2 0%

MD=TVD 8377 ft Qtest 4376 Water salinity 2000 ppm

STB/day

Casing ID 6.276 in Casing OD 7 in Tubing ID 2.991 in

3.Calculations And Results:
 Prosper designing results for different frequencies had been used are shown below:

Frequency Q(BPD) Head(ft) No. E (%) Power RPM

stages (HP) (rpm)
(Hz)

40 6982.5 2087.5 115 72.49 109.03 2302.43

50 6792.77 2064.07 84 73.45 108.82 2929.06

60 7031.5 2050.8 45 62.57 126.34 3522.09

70 7007 2000 26 70.34 115.56 4143.22

3.Calculations And Results:
 The table shows that the optimum ESP design estimated by Prosper was at 50 Hz and
select a pump from BAKER HUGHES (CENTURION P75) which can lift (4750-9000
PBD) with maximum OD of 5.38 in.
The optimum
flow rate and
head at 50 Hz
4.Discussion:
 for the same well designed previously by Prosper at 50 Hz had been designed by
Autograph PC and gave the below results:
4.Discussion:
 In comparison with Prosper the following results had been estimated:

Property Autograph PC Prosper

Q (BPD) 4376 6792.77

Head (ft) 2658 2006.07

No. stages 85 84

Power (HP) 127.3 108.822

Pump efficiency (%) 71.11 73.45

RPM(rpm) 2895 2929.06

4.Discussion:
 Although the results are approximate at 50 Hz but, Autograph PC give more accurate result
than Prosper due to:
 Autograph PC results are closer to hand calculation than Prosper.
 Autograph PC is modern software.
 Autograph PC used more well data than Prosper.
 Autograph PC software produced by Baker Hughes which worldwide specialized with ESP
designing and production otherwise Prosper include all artificial lift methods and models
produced by many companies.
4.Discussion:
Frequency effect on ESP design:
 Results table shows ESP at 50 Hz is the optimum design because:
 Although at 70 Hz the number of stages is the least but the head is less than other frequencies
also the power requirements is high and RPM is high that makes the pump temperature is
high.

 At 40 Hz the head is highest compeer with other frequencies but it uses 115 stage and needed
a power more than 50 Hz does.

 At 60 Hz the flow rate is the highest but the head is less than 40 and 50 Hz also it gave the
less pump efficiency compare with other frequencies and require high RPM.

 50 Hz estimate the optimum results compare with other frequencies upon this well
conditions.
5.Conclusions and Recommendation:
 CONCLUSIONS:
 Electrical Submersible Pumps is worldwide use in artificial lift.
 Frequency has essential effect on ESP design.
 The optimum ESP design depends on the well conditions.
 Autograph PC obtain more accurate design than Prosper.
 For the given well data Prosper and Autograph PC estimate the optimum ESP design at 50 Hz.

 RECOMMENDATIONS:
 Use Autograph PC for ESP design instead of Prosper.
 Try different frequencies in order to estimate the optimum design.
 Rely on complete well condition data in order to estimate more accurate results.
 Compare hand calculation with software estimation for more accurate results.
