 Applications
 Works
IC Engine
 The fuel is mixed with air in carburetor.
 The crankshaft rotates continuously by the torque provided. It pushes the
piston up and down.
 When the piston is moved upwards it gets compressed and it is ignited by an
electric spark in case of SI engine.
 It is synchronized with valves for their opening and closing. By which we get
charge.
 This is how an I.C. Engine works. The air and fuel mixture is generally in the
range of 10:1 to 20:1.
Mathematical Modelling/computational
Mathematics
 Understanding any physical phenomenon and developing the
mathematical model through the calculus, algebra and other theories,
as a set of equations that governs that physical phenomenon.
 Solving the equations using numerical techniques
 Gives Approximate Solutions instead of exact solution.
 Study of Black holes
 magnetohydrodynamics
 Stress analysis

Solution

This Numerical model helps us to understand the physical phenomenon

What is CFD?
 It stands for Computational Fluid Dynamics
 Solving the Fluid Mechanics with the help of a
computer.
 “It’s the use of Applied mathematics, physics and
computational power to understand the transport
phenomenon.
 Mass transfer
 Energy transfer
 Momentum transfer
Why CFD?
 An approach to designing where real world conditions are
mimicked (simulated) in an virtual environment.
 This leads to the following
 Save the trouble to setup the equipment to conduct the
experiments.
 Save the effort of prototyping.
 Saves cost and labour
 Helps understand the underlying physics better by visualisation
and repeatability of the simulation run.
