Cushing's Syndrome

Cushing syndrome occurs


when your body is exposed to
high levels of the hormone
cortisol for a long time.

AKA " hypercortisolism"

Medication (Glucocorticoids)

Caused by:

Tumor
Signs and Symptoms
• Weight gain and fatty tissue deposits, particularly around the midsection and
upper back, in the face (moon face), and between the shoulders (buffalo hump)

• Pink or purple stretch marks (striae) on the skin of the abdomen, thighs,
breasts and arms

• Thinning, fragile skin that bruises easily

• Slow healing of cuts, insect bites and infections

• Acne

Treatment
• Reducing corticosteroid use

• Surgery

• Radiation therapy

• Medications
Addison's Disease • Addison's disease is a rare disorder
that occurs when your body doesn't
produce enough of certain hormones,
which is the cortisol
• AKA "adrenal insufficiency"

Causes by:
• Primary adrenal insufficiency –
Autoimmune disease
• Secondary adrenal insufficiency –
Over production of ACTH
Signs and Extreme fatigue
symptoms Weight loss and decreased appetite

Darkening of your skin (hyperpigmentation)

Low blood pressure, even fainting

Salt craving

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)

Nausea, diarrhea or vomiting (gastrointestinal symptoms)

Abdominal pain

Muscle or joint pains

Irritability

Depression or other behavioral symptoms

Body hair loss or sexual dysfunction in women
