NON-DEFINING RELATIVE

CLAUSES
WHAT ARE NON-DEFINIGN RELATIVE CLAUSES?

Non-defining relative clauses are sentences we use to describe extra


information about the people or things we refer to, but that extra
information is not necessary to understand the meaning of the
sentence.
E.g: These jeans, which were very cheap, are my
favorite.

RELATIVE PRONOUNS
Relative pronouns are used to REFER
TO NOUNS MENTIONED *THAT: refers to objects, animal, and
PREVIOUSLY, whether they are
people in informal English.
people, places, things, animals, or
ideas. *WHO: people and sometimes pet
animals.
*WHICH: animals and things.
*WHOSE: possessive meaning.
*WHEN: refers to time
*WHERE: refers to places

EXAMPLES
*1. These pants, that I bought yesterday, are already ripped.
*2. Allen, who scored three goals in the first game, was the only player to perform well.
*3. Spaghetti, which we eat at least twice a week, is one of my family’s favorite meals.
*4. The woman, whose kid was crying, did not know how to do with the situation.
*5. The book, when it was finally returned, was torn and stained.
