BIOMASS ENERGY

TEAM C.O.R.A.L.
INTRODUCTION

“Can you ruin

something that made
you, or create
something that can
continue to nourish
you?”
PROBLEMS
An hour power outage in Nueva Vizcaya
and Ifugao

Power tripped due to technical failure

Affected 75, 000 households

Complaints about the gridlock at the ERC

“What are the other viable
source of energy or
electricity?”
Data / Facts
• Biomass energy is the largest form of
renewable energy in Europe

• It can contribute to carbon dioxide reduction

• This form of energy gives us the security of

supply

• Humans have used biomass energy from the

beginning of known civilization

• Human waste can be used as biomass

energy

• It has the potential to be a carbon neutral

form of energy
Data / Facts
• It currently meets about 10% of our
total energy needs

• Ethanol is a form of biomass

• Algae may unlock the future potential

of biomass

• The largest biomass plant in the world

today can produce up to 265
megawatts of power

• The amount of fuel that biomass

products can create is extraordinary
SOLUTIONS
Creation of canal
systems

Collection of wastes

Increase in water
supply
POSSIBLE
SOLUTIONS

Construction of dams

Increase in livestock
Biomass Implementation Program

In this program, local farmers and livestock

owners will be trained and encouraged to
collect all their agricultural wastes to use
as biomass fuel.

A small, but efficient, prototype for a

biomass fuel converter will be designed
and provided to these farmers, providing
them an alternative source of electricity for
their homes.

INTEREST STORY
• Three case studies in Alaska have invested
in biomass.

• Galena
- a small village that reaches -40 degrees
during winter
- its big industry is education
- Tim Kalke, a teacher, worked on plans to
improve the heating system of an
academy
- Consumption of fuel for the steam
(distribution of heat) was about 230,
000
- Creating a new heat system will be
essential
H U M A N
INTEREST STORY

- Old and inefficient steam boilers had to

be replaced better hot water boilers

Ketchikan International Airport

- Airport Manager Mike Carney said he first
looked into replacing the airport’s oil-fired
boilers with another system
- Ultimately, they found out that biomass
systems were more efficient and provided
bigger benefits.
- The new biomass system saved the
airport an estimated 40 percent on fuel
costs.
CONCLUSION/S
“A life full of waste
Is a life full of energy”
Biomass brings socio-economic and environmental benefits that will be key to a greener future.
