SMRT Pain Points

Sneak-Peek
• Total Route Length – 137 km
• No. of Stations – 92 (MRT Stations) & 14 (LRT
Stations)
• No. of Trains – 188 (NSEWL) & 64 (CCL)
• No. of Lines – 4
• Ridership – 753 million (FY2016)
Track Maintenance

• The Laser Track Trolley (custom-made for the inspection of running rails) measures not only the running rail wear but
also track geometry data at the same time. Data collected is then recorded in an integrated control panel and later
synced to its software for analysis.

• The maintenance team only has a 150-minute window to do track inspection every night and the trolley can inspect a
5km stretch continuously in one operation.

Rolling Stock Monitoring

• Sensors installed at City Hall MRT will also scan the entire North-South and East-West lines’ train fleet for defects
such as wear and tear to the wheels or axel defects.

• Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD) - Fibre optic sensors automatically detect and identify the locations of any
wheel defect on all the operational trains during revenue hours. When a wheel defect is detected, an alert is sent to
the Operations Control Centre and Rolling Stock Maintenance Controller.
Power Supply

• The third rail is an insulated steel rail that runs parallel to the entire length of track. It feeds electricity to the train
through collector shoes, which are metal blocks under the train.

• Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) helps monitor the alignment of the third rail.

• LVDT measures the movement of the Current Collection Device (CCD), which is in constant contact with the third rail
and through this data, the system can chart the precise height of every inch of the third rail.

• Engineers compare the latest graphs with earlier ones to identify deviations.
