 The Greeks are credited with putting map making on a sound
mathematical footing.
 The earliest Greek known to have made a map of the world was
Anaximander.
 In 6th century BC, he drew a map of the then known world, assuming
that the earth was cylindrical.

 One of the four main points of a compass: north, east, south, west.
symbol indicating the cardinal directions (N, S, E, W).
 One of the seven main land masses on Earth. the way in which
somebody or something goes, points, or faces.

 Political Maps
 Physical Maps
 Topographical Maps
 Climate Maps
 Economic or Resource Maps
 Road Maps
 Thematic Maps

characteristics of a place, usually drawn on a flat
surface.
 Maps present information about the world in a simple,
visual way.
 Theyteach about the world by showing sizes and
shapes of countries, locations of features, and
distances between places.

WHAT ARE MAPS USED FOR ?


 Political Maps: Political maps are the maps that you see most of the
time. They focus on the boundaries, cities, states, and capitals.
However, they show no topographical features.
 Climate Maps: Climate maps show information about the climate in
specific area. They are usually differentiated by temperature or climate
(like rainforest, desert, etc.) with different colors.
 Economic or Resource Maps: Economic or resource maps are used
for tracking an economic activity or natural resource in an area though
shapes, symbols, or colors.
