the Practice of Traditional

Medicine Compared to Modern Medicine

Introduction
Many of us nowadays believe in the effectiveness of
modern medicine especially who are in the urban places.
This is because modern medicine already proven and
tested by the experts.
People who live in the rural places prefer to use
traditional medicine especially they live far away from the
hospital. And this what their culture believe in healing or
treating diseases and health problems, despite the lack of
scientific proof.
Thus, in choosing what medicine you use it depends
on you for what you think is better whether the modern
or traditional medicine will help you to cure any health
problems.
Statement of the Problem
1. Which of the two modern medicine and traditional
medicine are most commonly practiced in Purok-4,
Baobaoan, Butuan City residents?

2. Which do you think is more effective between

traditional medicine and modern medicine?

3. What are the differences of modern and traditional

medicine in terms of:
Affordability
Side effects
Availability
Objectives
1. To determine which of the two kinds of medicine is
most commonly used in the community.
2. To know which is more effective in healing and
treating diseases.
3. To differentiate traditional medicine and modern
medicine.
Hypothesis
1. Modern medicine is commonly use in the
community.
2. Modern medicine is more effective compared to
traditional medicine.
3. Traditional medicine is more available compared to
modern medicine and more affordable than to
modern medicine and gave less side effects.
Scope and Delimitation
This study will aim to determine the essential
usage of traditional medicine and modern medicine
on some of individuals on the community in terms of
effectiveness, affordability and availability of these
medicinal treatments. By the use of survey
questionnaire we will be able to conduct a survey at
Purok-5, on the said study and also to know which of
the two were approximately used by individuals and
their usual practices and beliefs.
Review of Related Literature
Based on the traditional and modern medicine
in the South Africa, a research study by Edwards SD,
which focused or interviews by traditional Zulu
healers and modern clinical psychologists with the
same group of psychiatric patients. Results indicated
that even though traditional and modern
practitioners worked from different theorical
orientation they were in significant agreement as to
both diagnosis and treatment of patients when faced
with the same limited choice of options.
Furthermore, patients said that both traditional and
modern medicine as being more or less equally
helpful.

Medicine is really important to all people. This
helps a lot in recovering illness or diseases.Now in our
modern world we usually drink capsuled or processed
medicine, but there are also people who drink
traditional medicine.

home or community? Traditional medicine or modern
medicine?
=Traditional medicine
2.Who among in your community had reported that
he/she encountered various side effects after taking the
said medicine?
=Kalouy sadiyos wala man pud na niabot sa amoa. (In
God’s mercy we didn’t encounter it yet.)
3.What are the some common traditional medicines
you usually practiced or apply at home? State at least
5-10.
=Akapulko, guyabano, ahos, bayabas, sawan-sawan,
manyana, sinew-sinaw, kugon, and tawa-tawa.
4.What are the some common modern medicines you
usually practiced or apply at home?State at least 5-10.
=Penicillin, amoxicillin, biogesic, paracetamol,
solmux, loperamide, mefinamic,alaxan, and
buscopan.
Conclusion

Therefore, majority of the person that we

interviewed they prefer to choose traditional
medicine instead of modern medicine.
Recommendation

Based on the result of the study, the researchers

recommend that traditional medicine is most
commonly used in terms of affordability, availability
and most of all have no side effects that we can get.
