Forces 1: in This Unit We Will Learn The Following
Forces 1: in This Unit We Will Learn The Following
• identify changes that take place when particular forces are acting
• predict the effect of unbalanced forces acting in everyday situations
• describe some examples of technological developments that have
contributed to finding solutions to reduce the impact of forces in
everyday life
– car safety equipment and footwear design
• analyse some everyday common situations where friction operates to
oppose motion and produce heat
• investigate factors that influence the size and effect of frictional forces

Title: Introduction to Forces
Describe two things you did over the holidays and identify two different forces
involved in each of them. Be prepared to share.
Forces
• It is a push or pull

Changing Speed!
When an object gets faster we describe it as:
A c ra ing
Accelerating
When an object gets slower we describe it as:
Accelerating
ce ating
Scientists use the term acceleration for any change in speed.
If it is increasing speed it is positive acceleration.
If it is decreasing speed it is negative acceleration
Drawing Forces
Scientists use arrows (called vectors).
The direction of the arrow shows the direction of the force.
The length of the arrow shows how big the force is.

Worksheet
Complete worksheet by drawing vectors (arrows) to show the forces acting
in each example
Measuring Forces
• Springs squash when pushed and
stretch when pulled.
• The amount a spring changes length
can tell us how much force has been
applied
• Forces are measured in newtons (N)
after ’Sir Isaac Newton’
Measuring Forces
• Choose the most appropriate spring balance and measure the
force used to:
1. Open the main door 9. Snap a paddle-pop stick
2. Open the prep door 10. Lift the marker pen tub
3. Pull sticky tape off the bench 11. Lift your shoe
4. Pull your textbook along the 12. Drag your shoe along the bench
bench
5. Unzip your pencil case
6. Slide a stool along the hard floor
7. Slide a stool along the carpet
8. Lift a pair of tongs
