Forces 1

in this unit we will learn the following

• Change to an object's motion is caused by unbalanced forces acting on

the object.

• identify changes that take place when particular forces are acting
• predict the effect of unbalanced forces acting in everyday situations
• describe some examples of technological developments that have
contributed to finding solutions to reduce the impact of forces in
everyday life
– car safety equipment and footwear design
• analyse some everyday common situations where friction operates to
oppose motion and produce heat
• investigate factors that influence the size and effect of frictional forces

Title: Introduction to Forces

To understand what forces are, how they work and what

Aim:
are the different types

Key Words: Contact Forces: Pushes, Pulls, Twists, Friction

Non-contact Forces: Like what???
Discussion:
In 2-3 sentences, or more, describe what you did over the holidays.

Describe two things you did over the holidays and identify two different forces
involved in each of them. Be prepared to share.
Forces
• It is a push or pull

• acting upon an object as a result of its

interaction with another object

• Sometimes the effects of forces are easy to

see, such as the force of Harry Kewell’s foot
kicking a soccer ball.

• Other forces are invisible and harder to

recognise, such as the force that causes
dust particles to stick to a television screen.
Push or Pull
• We have a lot of different ways of saying
‘push’
– such as ‘shove’, ‘press’ and ‘touch’

• The same can be said for ‘pull’

– such as ‘tug’, ‘heave’ and ‘drag’

• They all refer to the same action of pushing

or pulling.
• These pushes and pulls are forces.

• A twist is both a push and a pull-

Title: Effects of Forces

To understand what the effects of forces

Aim:

Key Words: Contact Forces: Pushes, Pulls,

Non-contact Forces: Gravity,
Discussion: Affects: Speed, shape, direction

Define the term force. Give two examples.

Outline three ways that forces affect objects.

Effects of Forces
• Force cause a change in speed direction or shape

• What are affects of surfing forces?

• What happens to the water?

• The water changes shape
• The surfer?
• The surfer changes direction Friction
• The surfer gains or loses speed
• The board?
• The board is pulled or pushed by the surfer
What do forces do?
Change the way that Change the shape of
something is moving something

Discussion (link to last lesson):
You can’t see forces, you can only see the effect on an object.
How do scientists represent the size and direction of a force?

By drawing an arrow that starts where the force is applied

Title: Measuring Forces

Aim: To measure the forces involved in some actions and practise

drawing vectors to show forces

Key Words: Vectors, acceleration, Newton, N, spring balance

Balanced & Unbalanced

Changing Speed!
When an object gets faster we describe it as:

A c ra ing
Accelerating
When an object gets slower we describe it as:

Accelerating
ce ating
Scientists use the term acceleration for any change in speed.
If it is increasing speed it is positive acceleration.
If it is decreasing speed it is negative acceleration
Drawing Forces
Scientists use arrows (called vectors).
The direction of the arrow shows the direction of the force.
The length of the arrow shows how big the force is.

in each example
Measuring Forces
• Springs squash when pushed and
stretch when pulled.
• The amount a spring changes length
can tell us how much force has been
applied
• Forces are measured in newtons (N)
after ’Sir Isaac Newton’
Measuring Forces
• Choose the most appropriate spring balance and measure the
force used to:
1. Open the main door 9. Snap a paddle-pop stick
2. Open the prep door 10. Lift the marker pen tub
3. Pull sticky tape off the bench 11. Lift your shoe
4. Pull your textbook along the 12. Drag your shoe along the bench
bench
5. Unzip your pencil case
6. Slide a stool along the hard floor
7. Slide a stool along the carpet
8. Lift a pair of tongs

Discussion (link to last lesson):
Write two sentences demonstrating your understanding of how forces
affect objects.

Title: Types of forces

Aim: To demonstrate understanding of the effects of contact

and non-contact forces.
Contact, Non-contact, Gravity, Magnetism,
Key Words: Electrostatic
Non-Contact Forces

•Contact forces affect objects through

direct contact one object and another

•Non-contact forces affect objects at a

distance. They do not need to touch
each other.
Gravity
Gravity
•All mass has a
gravitational field

•All masses are attracted

to one another

•The bigger the mass the

stronger its gravity
Electrostatic

•Charges want to move

•Opposites attract

•Charged particles attract

uncharged particles

Would you believe I can make things levitate?
