 IT is the application of computer and
telecommunications equipment to store , retrieve ,
transmit and manipulate dates.
 The term is commonly used as a synonym for
computer and computer networks.
 It also encompasses other information distribution
such as T.Vs and Mobile Phones.
 Several industries are allocated with IT including
hardware , software , e-commerce , and computer
services.
 Indian IT Companies like WIPRO , TCS , HCL are
very successful companies.
 3 Branches of IT are Computer Technology ,
Electronics and Telecommunications.
 The National Informatics Centre was established in
March 1975.The inception of the computer maintenance
company(CMC) followed in October 1976.
 Between 1977-1980 the country’s information technology
companies Tata InfoTech, Patni Computer systems and
Wipro had become visible.
 The ‘microchip revolution’ of the 1980s had convinced
both Indira Gandhi and her successor Rajiv Gandhi that
electronics and tele-communications were vital to India’s
growth and development.
 Between 1986-1987, the Indian government
embarked upon the creation of three wide-area
computer networking schemes:
 INDONET(intended to serve the IBM mainframes in
India)
 NICNET(the network for India’s National
Informatics Centre)
 The academic research oriented Education and
Research Network(ERNET).
 1960: The industry is non existent
 1972: Software Export scheme
 1984-86: New Computer policy
 1990: Setting up of software Technology parks of
India
 1992-2000: Entry of various MNCs, Evolution of
offshore model and Global Delivery Model
 Post 2000 issues like Y2k, dot com bubble helped
India by positioning it as best cost provider.
