Effects of Light ,Sound, Heat

and Electricity
Relate the ability of the material to
blocked, absorbed, or translate
light to its use
• When a light wave with a single frequency strikes an
object, a number of things could happen. The light
wave could be absorbed by the object, in which case its
energy is converted to heat. The light wave could be
reflected by the object. And the light wave could be
transmitted by the object. Rarely however does just a
single frequency of light strike an object. While it does
happen, it is more usual that visible light of many
frequencies or even all frequencies is incident towards
the surface of objects. When this occurs, objects have a
tendency to selectively absorb, reflect or transmit light
certain frequencies.
• The color of the objects we see in the natural
world is a result of the way objects interact
with light. When a light wave strikes an object,
it can be absorbed, reflected, or refracted by
the object. All objects have a degree of
reflection and absorption.
• Absorption-Light stops at the object and does
not reflect or refract. Objects appear dark or
opaque.
• Reflection on a smooth surface-Light bounces
off the surface of a material at an angle equal
to the angle of the incoming light wave.
• Refraction-Light goes through the object and
bends at an angle.

Light
• Light is electromagnetic
radiation within a certain
portion of the
electromagnetic spectrum.
The word usually refers to
visible light, which is the
visible spectrum that is
visible to the human eye
and is responsible for the
sense of sight.
Uses of lights
• Illumination – lighting for homes, offices, warehouses
• Signs – illuminating signs in any shape or size
• Backlighting applications – miniature fluorescent lighting is used in
avionic display illumination and backlighting in computer and
technological applications
• Phototherapy – UV lights provide health benefits to a wide range of
illnesses
• Tanning – LightSources provides patented technology for maximum
tanning effects
• UV Curing – UV curing solutions are used in many industries to improve
quality and cost- efficient operations
• UVC Germicidal Applications – Ultraviolet energy is highly effective at
eradicating bacteria and viruses from air, water and surfaces
Sound
• Sound is a vibration that
typically propagates as an
audible wave of pressure,
through a transmission
medium such as a gas,
liquid or solid. In human
physiology and psychology,
sound is the reception of
such waves and their
perception by the brain.
Uses of Sounds
• There are many uses of sound, some very
important are : Sound is used to communicate
eith each other. In SONAR(Sound Navigation
and Ranging)sound is used to determine the
position of submarines in sea or to find the
depth of sea. Sound finds many applications in
entertainment electronics,radio,cassette, etc.
Heat
• Heat is energy in transfer to or from a
thermodynamic system, by mechanisms other
than macroscopic work or transfer of matter.
Uses of Heat
• Mammal Survival. Mammals consume food,
which provides calories for the body. ...
• Plant Survival. Plants need water and sunlight
to grow, but many also need heat. ...
• Energy and Safety. Solar energy traps heat
from sunlight and converts it into
usable energy. ...
• Fires.
Electricity
• Electricity is the presence and
flow of electric
charge.Electricity now provide
us different types of energy
waves which allow us to
accomplish common chores.
Its best-known form is the
flow of electrons through
conductors such as copper
wires. The word "electricity"
is sometimes used to mean
"electrical energy".
Uses of Electricity
• Electrical energy is used throughout the world to
power devices, appliances and methods of
transportation utilized in daily life. To make things
operate, electrical energy must be emitted from
energy sources such as power plants, to enable
an object to consume the power it needs to
function. As a result, the electrical energy permits
people to watch television in their home, or
purchase soda from a vending machine because
the electrical energy is available.
