REAR AXLE
Rear axle is the last member of power train. In most of automobiles, real
axle is the driving axle. It lies between the driving wheels and the differential
gear and transmit power from the differential to the driving wheels. It
consists of two half shaft connected to the differential gear, one for one
wheel. The inner end of the each half shaft connected to the sun gear of the
differential and the outer end to the wheel. The rear axle and differential
gear are completely encloses in a housing which protecting them from
water, dust and injury.
Function of rear axle:
The rear axle mainly performs following two functions.
1. It carries the weight of the vehicle.
2. It rotates and transmits the power from the engine to the wheels
To get engine power to your wheels, your vehicle relies on an assembly of gears
called the Transmission Assembly. This system, also known as a gearbox, allows you
to "shift" gears as you drive. It lets your vehicle move backward and forward in
varying speeds using different amounts of power. That way, you can adjust to various
road and driving conditions. In most vehicles, the gearbox is connected to the
engine's crankshaft. What the gearbox does is it delivers power from the crankshaft
to the driveshaft. The driveshaft in, in turn, transmits the rotational energy to your
differentials, which drive your wheels. Aside from transmitting power, your
transmission also gives you control over your engine operation. It lets you choose
your vehicle's directional movement and how much power is supplied to your wheels.
Most contemporary gearboxes have around 5-7 forward gears, one neutral, and one
reverse. By shifting between these gears, you can be sure your wheels are getting
enough power to get you from point A to point B. Aside from having varying numbers
of gears, transmission assemblies also come in two main forms: automatic and
manual. While both systems require the use of a gearshift

In modern usage, the term engine typically describes devices, like
steam engines and internal combustion engines, that burn or
otherwise consume fuel to perform mechanical workby exerting
a torque or linear force (usually in the form of thrust). Devices
converting heat energy into motion are commonly referred to simply
as engines.[3] Examples of engines which exert a torque include the
familiar automobile gasoline and diesel engines, as well
as turboshafts. Examples of engines which produce thrust
include turbofans and rockets.
When the internal combustion engine was invented, the
term motor was initially used to distinguish it from the steam engine—
which was in wide use at the time, powering locomotives and other
vehicles such as steam rollers. The term motor derives from the Latin
verb moto which means to set in motion, or maintain motion. Thus a
motor is a device that imparts motion.
