Lesson 1: Searching for

Patterns in SEQUENCES
Competency:
1. Define Sequence or
Progression.
2. Generates Pattern given
succession of numbers.
Example:

1. 5, 10, 15, 20, __ , __

2. 3, 5, 7, 9, __, __, __
3. 2, 5, 8, 11, __
4. 5, 7, 9, 11, __, __
Sequence Progression – is
a succession of numbers
formed according to a rule.
It is also a function
defined on the set of
positive integers. The
elements of a sequence
constitute a term.
The subscript
determines the
ordinal of the term,
i.e a1 the first term, a2
the second term, and
an the nth term.
Illustrative Examples:
1. Write the next 3 terms of the
sequence: 4, 9, 14, 19, …

2. Write the first 3 terms and

the 100th term of the sequence
defined by the general rule
an = 5n – 11.
3. Determine the
general rule given the
terms of the sequence:
3, 10, 17, 24, …
EXERCISES:
Write the next three terms of
the following sequence.
1. 20, 16, 12, __, __, __
2. -20, -14, -7, __, __, __
3. 2, 4, 8, 16, __, __, __
4. 200, 100, 50, __, __, __
5. 4, 6, 9, 13, 18, __, __, __
