Background
• The left brain / right brain specialization was done
by Joseph Bogen, Robert Ornstein and Roger
Sperry .
• In 1990s – additional brain research had broadened
the left / right brain theory.
• Then a ‘whole-brain’ theory is being concluded
when both halves of our brain works together.
Roger Wolcott Sperry

Ned Herrman
Robert Onstein

Joseph Bogen
In January 1998, Ned Herrmann
concluded that to support a four-
quadrant, whole brain theory that
defined not only the left brain and
right brain modes but also the
cerebral and limbic modes.

It is clear that the creative process is a

product of intense interaction between the
two hemispheres.
• The Whole Brain® model was
developed by Ned Herrmann who
was curious about the nature and
source of learning and creativity.
• His research made it clear to him
that the source of both creativity
and learning is the brain.
• The Whole Brain® model is a
metaphor that divides the brain
into four quadrants: Analytical
Thinking, Practical Thinking,
Relational Thinking and
Experimental Thinking.
Right Hemisphere
Conceptual, holistic,
intuitive, imaginative and
non-verbal

The right hemisphere of

the brain is commonly
considered the cradle of
creativity
