Mechanical Methods

 For most spills, regardless of whether they

are on land or water, mechanical
containment and recovery of the spilled
material is the typical response.

 Mechanical methods, including booms,

absorbents, and physical barriers are the
most frequently used response tools for
cleanup and containment of spills on land.
Mechanical containment and recovery
equipments used to collect spilled
material include:

Booms Skimmer Barriers

s
Booms

 Equipment called containment booms acts like a fence to

prevent the oil from further spreading or floating away.

 Booms float on the water surface and have three parts –

i. Freeboard-part that rises above the water surface, containing

the oil and preventing it from splashing over the top
ii. Skirt-placed below the surface and keeps the oil from being
squeezed under the booms and escaping
iii. Kind of cable or chain-connects parts to strengthen and stabilize
boom.
Connected sections of the boom are placed around the area of
the oil spill until it is totally surrounded and contained.
