Ancient Civilisations

 The movement of the sky were studied by ancient civilisations.They

used the movements of the SUN and the MOON to measure time.
This helped them to plan when to sow seeds and raise crops.
 It seemed to all the ancient Greeks that all the objects were set in
crystal spheres, which moved around the earth.
ARISTARCHOS
 Aristarchos, a Greek philosopher suggested that the movements of
the planets could be explained by considering them to move
around the sun. The other Greek Philosophers were not enthusiastic
about this idea and preferred their model featuring crystal spheres.
 The arrangement of sphere but then did not fully fit with the
observations made of their movements in the space. Example:
Mercury and Venus did not move so far from the SUN as the crystal
sphere arrangement as they should , and the apparent backward
motion of MARS,JUPITER and SATURN occasionally occurred
couldn’t be explained by this model.
 PTOLEMY
Then a Egyptian
Astronomer
Ptolemy, who
lived in the 2nd
century., proposed
an explanation .
TYCHO BRAHE
 He was a Danish astronomer who made
detailed observations and even observed
the great comet that came in 15777.he
discovered that the comet was much far
away than the moon and thus not part of
our atmosphere.
OBSERVATIONS
Then after many years many
people like Galileo Galilei, Isaac
Newton. Johannes Kepler and
William Gilbert. They all
concluded that the structure of
the Solar System only worked out
when six planets were present
