CHAPTER 7 : LINEAR

INEQUALITIES
7.1 INEQUALITIES
LEARNING OUTCOMES :

• Compare the values of numbers

• Describe inequality and form algebraic inequality
• Identify relationship
• The converse property and the transitive property of
inequalities
• Additive and multiplicative inverse
INEQUALITIES

• The relationship between two quantities that do not have the same value
is known as an inequality.
KEYWORDS
• > = more than
Example, 80 > 50 ; 80 is more than 50
• < = less than
Example, 50 < 80 ; 50 is lesser than 80
• ≥ = equal or more than
Example, weight of Aidan is equal or more than 40kg [ Weight of Aidan ≥ 40kg]
• ≤ = equal or less than
Example, weight of Aidan is equal or less than 50kg [ Weight of Aidan ≤ 50kg]
COMPARE THE VALUES OF NUMBERS

Negative numbers are always Power 2 is always bigger than

smaller than positive power 1
TIPS
• Negative number is always smaller than positive numbers (-5 < 4)
• Comparison between fraction and a whole number, fraction is always smaller than whole number
2
[ <1]
5
• Comparison between fractions :
1
i. numerator same, check the denominator. Lower the denominator, the higher the value. [ <

2
3 4
ii. Denominator same, check numerator. Lower numerator, smaller value. [ < ]
6 6
iii. Both not same, use calculator. Check the decimal point value.
• Decimal number with more number of places is smaller. [ 0.02 < 0.2 ]
• Kg is bigger than g, cm is bigger than mm.
• 2 is smaller than 2.
Self Practice 7.1 (a)
Fill in the boxes with the symbol ‘>’ or ‘<’ so that it becomes a true statement.
Hence, write an inequality for each statement by using ‘is greater than’ or
‘is less than’.

Solution :
(a) -6 < 0 (-6 is lesser than 0)
DESCRIBE INEQUALITY AND FORM ALGEBRAIC
INEQUALITY

8 is on the right of x. Hence, 8 is bigger/greater than x.

Solution :
x<8 OR 8>x
x is less than 8 8 is greater than x
IDENTIFY RELATIONSHIP
Keywords :
• At least : ≥
• At most : ≤

• When performing reciprocal of both
numbers on both sides of the inequality,
the direction of the inequality symbol is
reversed.
• It is known as multiplicative inverse.
